Playing .TS Files

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I probably would've created this thread in the Microsoft Section. But Mr. Audio has showed me the PS3 is so much better at handling stream content.

But now to the point. I have a new movie laying around with the 'container' .TS - A file i had to install a few codecs before i could play it.

I have been googling for an hour now, trying to find some proper converter tools, since the PS3 won't play the file as is.

Tried a few suggestions i found, like changing the name of the file from .ts to .mpg, but that only works for 'smaller' files. Tried some software, one called HDTV2MPEG2 i believe, but since my .TS file is using VC1 it doesn't find the audio channel and therefore does not work.

So anyone has a guide/software suggestions how to get my file streamed in proper quality. I also own a 360 (no MCE available ) So suggestions for that one is also appreciated.

Audioboxer, you need to write one of those awesome guides for every available HD Container, get crackin' :p

Did you read my post :p

oops, missed it :p

maybe you could demux, convert the audio to another format and remux? then try run it as an .mpg or run hdtv2mpeg on it? I think VLC player can mux video, however I'm not sure as I've only had to do it once.

I'm not that familiar with ts, I think it's similar to .m2ts, which is a BR container.

People should just rip in the open format, which is MKV :p

Have a quick read at this - http://www.highdefforum.com/showthread.php?t=41278

I'll do some more digging for you. I assume what you want to do is change it to something like MKV without quality loss - aka remuxing/muxing.

As many applications can probably transcode to MKV for you, but that's a bit of a waste of time, as if transcoding is your only option, you might as well just transcode to MPG, which the PS3 can play.

Transcoding is (N) though... So i'll see if I can help you change the container only.

If we can get it to MKV without transcoding, then we can use MKV2VOB (Y)

I assume it's a movie, so the only other thing I can quickly ask just now, is reripping/getting it in MKV not a possibility to save yourself the hassle of trying to change .ts to .mkv? Or is the only option to work with this .ts file?

Yes, It's similar to .m2ts. You can use tsRemuxer to convert from .ts to .m2ts actually, but apparently the PS3 will not play a streaming .m2ts, only when burned to a disc or placed on a an external harddrive/USB stick. ( Don't have any 9GB+ USB Sticks though ).

Was just hoping a similar software like MKV2VOB was released, this is not urgent so I'm trying to avoid all those conversion guides where you need to install 3-4 pieces of software, but if no other option presents itself i just gotta do it.

But as you said, transcoding (N), no point in having High-Definition file if they are gonna look worse than a DVD really.

Thanks though for looking into it, would be sweet to have every container conversion covered at some point. But still puzzles me why we need to have so many different containers, wish there would some sorta' standard. ( Well, .MKV is a standard, just wish everyone would stick with it ).

The only option right now is to work with the .ts file ...

Thanks (Y)
