+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted March 31, 2008 Author Subscriber² Share Posted March 31, 2008 And that makes it less confusing?! No, it does not. Funnily enough it did make it less confusing. 20GB was killed off early, and instead of two models on the market at that point with major feature differences (60GB WiFi, 40GB No Wifi), there was only the 60GB to buy. Sethos
Why would you need to know about a model that doesn't exist anymore... it sells for a high price on ebay... if your buying that you are not the average joe... People KNEW about the 20gig model and then it was gone, THAT'S confusing. It's not like they just snuck it in during the night!
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted March 31, 2008 Author Subscriber² Share Posted March 31, 2008 People KNEW about the 20gig model and then it was gone, THAT'S confusing. It's not like they just snuck it in during the night! Yeah, but if we go by sales Sony told us, no one was buying it - If no one buys it, its hardly going to be missed. So I don't really deem that as "confusing". It was not a good idea from a business POV, or a consumer POV to keep the 20GB going - Sony never offered a WiFi adapter for the 20GB as far as im aware, so if you bought it, you could "never" go WiFi. Axeing 20GB > Not Axeing 20GB. It was a mistake on Sony's part launching it, but I guess they thought it would sell better due to it's slightly lower launch price. spenser.d
If you don't read the box of what you're buying/don't do ANY research at all, it is ultimately your fault. The consumer would only partially be at fault. They should read the box (but you know next to nobody does), but based on the past (PS2 being able to play PS1 games), it is reasonable to assume that the PS3 would play PS2 and PS1 games. And hell, some of them can, so if some of them can, it's also reasonable to assume that all of them can. It seems counterintuitive on Sony's part to make it so some can and some can't. -Spenser
Sethos
It doesn't need to sell, to add to the confusion. It just needs to be available and be advertised. But we can argue this all day, fact is, some actually do find it confusing believe it or not, some don't. The PS3 had a successful predecessors with some great features, some people expect those in consoles 'sequel' as well.

Why assume, when you can just as easily check what something does and what it doesn't do by reading? I see where you're coming from though. Sony would just say to you, did you read the box/description in store before buying?, and your "moan" at them would be nullified. So no 8 million dollar lawsuits for false advertising :p I do think it's a minus they've split BC/No BC, but they had to do something with prices and all the negative press the PS3 was getting. If you were running Sony, you'd have been looking at your cards to see what the best way to reduce prices would've been. Ditching/not having BR was out of the question, look where Sony are now with BR. They felt ditching a last generation advantage over compromising something that's needed this generation, would be a wiser option. Eg, instead of ditching a hard drive completely/removing WiFi/ect, they ditched BC. You'll always have people moaning no matter what compromise you make, but reduce the amount of moaners to a minimal, and effectively you've actually be "successful". Price was the number one complaint, and to reduce price, it's simple logic what has to be done - Either components are made cheaper/or cuts are made on features. Danrarbc
The 20GB model was discontinued for a good reason, no one bought it :p The way I see it only one PS3 model sold out at launch, and it wasn't the 60GB model.
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted March 31, 2008 Author Subscriber² Share Posted March 31, 2008 The way I see it only one PS3 model sold out at launch, and it wasn't the 60GB model. I don't know if that's some sort of pointless joke, but the 20GB model did not sell well in comparison to the 60GB. Read some old articles on the web. "At launch, we offered two separate models of PlayStation 3 to meet the diverse needs and interests of our PlayStation fan base. Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of ninety percent in favor (sic) of the 60GB SKU, so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly. Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America. In addition to the larger internal hard drive, the 60GB PlayStation 3 features added storage media slots and built-in Wi-Fi not found in the 20GB system. Based on retailer and consumer feedback, we have decided to focus our current efforts on the more popular 60GB model." Xerxes
Another PS3 model that won't see the light of day here :p We never got the 80Gb (Sony didn't want to release it here) so currently the 40Gb is all you can get, at least it makes it easy on which PS3 model to get

EnzoFX
uhm.... IMO, the average consumer that people keep bringing up, are going to buy the PS3 to play PS3 games. The average customer will probably have kept their PS2. IMO, BC is an afterthought for the avg customer. They probably eventually buy in because of all the new stuff they hear about: HD, Blu-Ray, HD Gaming, Media playback features, DLC, etc......
