Just joined the PS3 Bandwagon

My only goal in a game is to complete it achievements are like ok wow what now.

Well they're just designed to make games last a bit longer. Like kill 100 of something.. It's not required, but it adds more length and fun to the game.

I suppose it adds features to games they don't really need.

Drake's Fortune is a great game. The only problem for me was it was short. I don't think it actually was short its just I couldn't put it down and didn't want it to end. It's also one game where you don't want to skip the cut scenes.

I use my PS3 mainly for xvid playback. I've just watched Prison Break Season 2, Heroes Season 2 and started on Lost season 1 onwards. Anyway, Drake's Fortune is a must. I have GTA on pre-order and consider that to be another must have title.

I know you guys love your console and all.

I have owned one, and it really didnt do it for me.

You have to make too many sacrifices like a lack of games for a long long time, if you bought it at launch, all you've got thats half decent is COD4 and RBSV2 .. obviously GTA IV now but still no voice built into game.

The PlayStation 3 is an absolute disappointment in the online sector, and they need to improve this quickly, very very quickly if they want to start selling consoles at a higher rate.

Online is absolutely *!$? Inviting a friend to a game is almost a form of torture, getting a decent game is slim to none at anything, the controller you get out of the box is being phased out and Sony have admitted DualShock was always the way to go.

You know what though, i genuinely believe the PlayStation 3 could be a killer killer machine, but there are that many people at Sony who have not got a clue, and are too concerned about how they can make money rather than how to make the console, and build it correctly, the focus has to be Community, Online, Seamless Gaming.

PlayStation Home (Delayed Again!) XMB Friends (Nightmare).

Microsoft have the best "software" on any of the next-gen consoles, i just feel that PlayStation could match it or even better it with just a bit more effort.

Microsoft took many a billion dollar hit to build the console and do it the right way, get the community and online gaming seamless and easy, and the rest just falls into place.

Sony are still way too confused about what they want from the PlayStation 3, they promote it as a Blu-ray player first then a games console second, then something you can install an operating system on third, then something you can stream content on via your network fourth ... i mean they have to get at least one of these right before they do everything else.

PS3 just fails at everything miserably at the minute, and its such a god damn shame, because it has the potential to be somethign so much greater.

I have a question, im getting a ps3 either tomarrow (friday) or saturday. Does or has anyone play(d) Virtua fighter 5? I dont care about the online part of games, but I have always been a fan of vf5, and I heard tekkin has a new game coming to the ps3 also. Shooters are ok to an extent, but I prefer fighting. Is vf5 worth it?

PS3 just fails at everything miserably at the minute>, and its such a god damn shame, because it has the potential to be somethign so much greater.

Fair enough that's your view, but that is waaaay to harsh IMO.

Online doesn'tfail>, it does the basics just fine. Ok a lot of what's missing from Live makes the experience better but the core online play is there, much better than it was on the PS2 - So therefore anyone who enjoys the PS brand will be happy to see a better experience than last gen.

You have to remember xbox players had Live last generation, therefore their expectations are high for the 360. The PS2 practically had no decent online platform, and coming off that to what the PS3 offers is actually fairly refreshing.

I also don't understand why PSNneeds> to be as good as Live right away. We know what's coming, fair enough it's been delayed on occasion which is rough, but the PS3 has been out just over a year, compared to the 360 which is approaching 3 years. The 360 is always going to be an older/more mature platform than the PS3 this generation.

The platform will stablize, it's not as good just now, but saying it "fails" on everything is a little puzzling. Unless your expectations of the PS3 were blown way out of proportion - Which may have been helped by Sony pre-PS3 release.

There hasn't really been any major PS3 exclusives released yet, and as long as Sony keep their promise of 2008 bringing everything together (software, PSN, Home, games), then I think most of us will be happy and bite the bullet on the wait we've had.

By the way do you own a PS3?

Sony are still way too confused about what they want from the PlayStation 3, they promote it as a Blu-ray player first then a games console second, then something you can install an operating system on third, then something you can stream content on via your network fourth ... i mean they have to get at least one of these right before they do everything else.

The funny thing is, for all the juggling they did, whether you think it was right or wrong, it paid off - Sony are now unrivalled in the physical media market -No one> is going to buy the 360 as DVD player, however people ARE buying the PS3 as an HD movie player.

You can argue about digital downloads all you want, but the PS3 is undoubtedly going to see a higher % of purchases as being a Blu Ray player than the 360 will see as an online movie rental system.

Sony have also been confirmed to be launching a download service, and it only helps them more that the have large ties in the movie world.

While I don't think the juggling initially helped any consumers at all, it helped Sony, and now it actually is helping consumers.

Just because the PS2 had no online platform at all, doesnt mean that you guys should be fed the absolute pile of crap you've been given with PS3, two wrongs dont make a good thing.

The fact that PSN is there and running ok makes it somewhat decent, but my main point, which you missed, was that before the PSN was even up and running, Sony should have concentrated on making community and getting the gaming part of it right, theres no point in having a console if its a headache to play online.

I owned a PS3 and took it back, for exactly this reason, i bought it at launch, and i was not prepared to wait around for a year to a year and a half, to have A) any decent games B) an online service that is actually usable and c) a way to play with friends.

Sony are marketing home as the saviour of its online capabilities, but i believe that it will be a disappointment, why? .. and you may think im being over-critical, but you cant help but look at Home and think, well its another Sony money making strategy, its not about friends or you enjoying yourself, or you playing games with your friends seamlessly, its about advertisers streaming content to you via TV's in Home, like i said about the being confused, why cant they keep it simple.

Why oh why, do we have to have, a beautifully rendered HD 3D World, where to show off your "Achievements" you have to take a friend to your "Trophy Room", where you can spend money on crap such as "TV's and Decorations for your apartment", The mini-games idea is very cool and i'll grant that as a very good idea, to jump into a game with friends, oh look you've got to be in your apartment.

Its just way over complicated ... hence delay after delay after delay.

What im emphasizing is, is that you guys deserve better, you've spent a stupid amount of cash on it ( i did aswell but got my money back ) Why should you all have to wait for a year after the console is out, for any decent games, for an online gaming experience etc.

Sony should have sorted this first, before building the hype and it being such a god damn let down, the machine has potential, if it really wanted too it could hugely outsell 360.

But the fact is, it never will.

The simple fact that the software for online is not and will not be good enough, Home is over-complicated and too confusing, its a Social Networking Space/Gaming/Advertising space, and like i said before trying to do too much means each one is done badly.

XBOX 360 - "I want to play with a friend or get a friend into my game" > 1. Place disc in drive > 2. Press XBOX Button > 3. Find Friend, and Press X to Invite.

PS3 - "I want to play with a friend or get a friend into my game" > 1. Insert Game 2. Oh no wait, back to XMB cant invite from within Game > 3. Goto "Friends" > 4. Find Friend, Press A > 5. Send Message > 6. Send Invitation

You know what really really irritates me about PS3.

How can they not ship the thing with a Headset .. dont give me bluetooth shi*, have you ever tried playing a game with a Bluetooth headset in your ear?! absolute pain in the behind.

To sum it all up what we have here is a brilliant piece of hardware, ruined by poor management, and greedy profit hungry CEO's.

No Community, No Games, Confused, Limited Gaming Intergration (No Voice In GTA IV for a Start!! Lame!), HD Player as a Format that is not going to be mainstream this generation will skip with On-Demand services taking hold.

If you want just a Blu-Ray Player then yes get a PS3 none better, and its the best Blu-Ray player out there as the profile can be updated, its only a matter of time before next-gen BR players have profile updates too.

As a Games Console, something you enjoy ... it just falls way short of the mark in every sense.

We'll see on that. Sony have made great leaps to turn the PS3 from what it was on day 1, into what it is now and I can only see it getting better - Fair enough people say time will always make everything better, but I forsee large leaps. At some point over time your console peaks at it's "best", I think the PS3 is far from that on the online side, but the 360 is pretty much at it's best - And don't get me wrong, that is a good thing.

I'm not going to reply to the rest of your beefs, they're legitmate to you, and you even returned your PS3 due to them. Fair enough, the PS3 isn't for you.

But let's see if you rebuy one towards the end of 2008/start of 2009 then if all your beefs mostly lay with the online part ;)

HD Player as a Format that is not going to be mainstream this generation will skip with On-Demand services taking hold.

Uh your definition of mainstream please?

Of course BR is mainstream, it's the only physical HD format on the market.

yes, virtua fighter is a great game and it looks beautiful too. tekken 6 will be coming out, but there's no release date. however, there is a tekken 5: dark resurrection on the playstation store that you can download, which is like a remake of the psp version.

Just because its the only physical format, doesnt mean its mainstream, it just means its the only physical format available to consumers, and as its the only physical media format available the fact that Blu-Ray sales havent gone through the roof is enough for me.

But look, Audioboxer, i agree all of my or at least the majority of my "beefs" are with the online part of things, and i will say here and now that yes i will re-buy one the moment they sort it out, they've just really irritated me by the way they've behaved since launch, it should never have been launched until this stuff was sorted out.

I do hope that Microsoft revamp the 360 before then, and we see a big leap from them, but if not by the end of 2008 if Sony sort out the PlayStation 3 then yes i would re-consider, just to play LittleBigPlanet

The PS3 really shines in HD. When I got mine I liked it but I was only playing it in SD. When you got it hooked up to HD it was like night and day (for me at least) everything looks better and has turned me into a major addict. Only problem with the PS3 I have right now is no ingame xmb (hurry up already sony) and lack of good games. There are a bunch of awesome titles scheduled for a 2008 release, lets hope they don't get delayed.

If there's only one good thing I can say about the PS3, its that you won't have to worry about your console dying on you :)

i use to talk trash about the ps3 too my friend until i played one for week and enjoyed my FREE online experience on cod4 and the ability to upgrade the hardrive at my own will and copy all my media to the system for later use, when you play you get use to having no rumble and not playing with mic but you know that these are things you can optionally get now, and when your having fun your not going to be thinking about rumble because your having fun your not going to be thinking about a mic why because your winning.

I also just received my PS3 from Amazon yesterday which I bought for GTA IV. It will end up only costing me $279 since I used the sony card promotion to get $100 off and then I used the 5% trick on Amazon to knock another $20 off to go with the no tax and free shipping. I love it so far and for $279 it really is a great deal. As someone else said you get blu-ray, free networking, and wireless built-in and even though I do have a wireless ethernet adapter it's better to have it built in so there are less wires to deal with. Xbox Live just doesn't interest me because I wouldn't really call myself a hardcore gamer and think Playstation Network will be fine for me. I also love the XMB with it's minimalist design as the Xbox Dashboard is just to in your face and gaudy. Streaming also works great even though I don't really enjoy using WMP to stream with. I wish iTunes sharing was compatible with the PS3 but I guess they use different protocols to share. GTA IV is great so far and the amount of detail is amazing and new to me since I only had a PS2 before and hadn't really experienced much next-gen games. It did lock up for 5-10 secs a few times near the apartment during one playing session but then it would be alright. It hasn't completely locked up yet so hopefully I don't have that problem.

You should have a look at TVeristy! - http://www.tversity.com

It's what most of us on Neowin use to stream films/music and tv shows. If you're into your HD content, have a look at the guide in my sig if you want - It's needing an update to match the current version of the program that is used to convert HD media to a PS3 format, but you'll still get the basics from the guide.

You may notice the interface in TVersity isn't exactly swanky, but the guys working on the project released an update a few days ago to say the update should be out in a week or two with the new interface (Y)

They put up some mockups of the interface back in december,

Hopefully it resembles them, as they do look nice!

Unfortunately you only have Microsoft to blame. They (MS) rushed to market and haven't exactly behaved as you would expect a huge company too (RROD, 33% failure rate?), because of that Sony had no choice but to rush as well. Its clear to see both companies rushed products out of the door.

Its a sad state of affairs really. This 'generation' has been marred by shoddy hardware and unfinished products thus far.

Lets hope than when Sony finally manage to catch up and pull their fingers out, things will change for the better (I'm talking more PSN than anything else as I'm more than happy with what the console offers offline).

Try 16.4%. Is that acceptable either? Nope, but please quote the correct figures

16.4% is far from acceptable. I did put a question mark next to the 33% as many internet sites claim its more like that figure than 16.4%
