Sony Non-Shocker: Sixaxis Discontinued

0 Comments | Posted by Stephen Totilo on 4/2/08 at 12:58 pm.

I got my DualShock 3 controller from Sony today. The new controller, which goes on sale in North America this week, will make my Sony games start rumbling ASAP.

But unboxing my DualShock 3 made me wonder about my PS3?s Sixaxis controllers. Are they the old hotness?A Sony rep tells me that the Sixaxis is indeed on the way out: ?Sixaxis will no longer be offered after it?s completely sold through at retail (likely by the summer timeframe).?.?

The original rumble-free motion-controller won?t make it out of 2008. So seeya, Sixaxis. Hello, motion-sensitive, rumbling Dualshock 3.

guess we should be expecting DS3's to be packed in with the PS3 later this year.

do the new dual shocks wont have the motion controller?

Are you making things up then reading them?

Of course it has motion sensing, it says so in the article,

Hello, motion-sensitive, rumbling Dualshock 3.

Seems right. There's no point in supporting the old sixaxis, its too light and toy-like. Bring on the Dual Shock 3 bundles.

Exactly, felt too light too.

I'm glad that one more time we all get screwed by Sony. So anyone who was buying Siaxis and even Dual Shock3 is an idiot since DS3 will be coming in the package with PS3.

Lovely. It just blows my mind, how people are fine with this. But I guess it's GREAT that they offer DS3, since it's so revolutionary it wasn't possible to offer in the beginning.

Another ripoff. Rape the people who give money for something that others get for free.

sony should allow people to trade in their old controllers for a discount or something for the new ones... it only seems fair...

Because we want Dual Shock back. What's your solution, Sony invent a time machine, take the settled lawsuit documents and go back to PS3 launch and bundle in DS3? Wouldn't surprise me if you picked that option over this.

Couldn't get if for launch, but at least we are now.

Hey, like I said, this is good for those that don't care - Be prepared to be picking up cheap Sixaxis controllers everywhere.

Still bitter eh? It doesn't bother me at all since the rumble feature isn't in half of the games anyways and I have a DS3. I'm glad the PS3 came out when it did instead of Sony delaying it any more to settle the lawsuit.

Just like the HDM argument about profiles, its not like your games stop playing.. lol

I'm perfectly alright thank you.

I was merely poking a wee bit of fun at you for asking a question answered in the article. Take the route of laughing (or as Homer might say, Doh!), rather than taking offense mate!

I'm not sure if you meant that as sarcasm, but this is common sense. So I paid for DS3 controller $50 and now they'll be giving them for free. They just keep raping the user base. Not that I really didn't expect them to do this. Their business practices are screw the consumer anyway you can.

Please explain to me how this is any different from MS screwing people over by releasing inferior components in their console just to beat everyone to the punch and therefore having the whole RROD fiasco...

Deciding to include an HDMI connection on every new console therefore screwing older customers...

Upping to HD on the 360 to 120GB...

I mean seriously, if you are going to complain about a choice of controller, do not make it seem like Sony are the only ones who do it... MS is quite guilty of it as well.

Early adopters, for lack of a better term, always tend to get screwed, so I really truly fail to see how this is a Sony only issue.

They aren't giving the controllers away for free either. Should I return my 60GB model for a 80GB or 40GB model because they aren't as loud? They screwed me there.

The only "free" DS3 you'll get will be bundled with a $400 console. I hardly call that free.

But hey, if you want your "free" DS3, go spend $400 on another PS3 instead of $50 for an individual DS3. Your choice.

I feel far from "raped", such a silly term to use here. I'm actually happy with the progress Sony have been making for us, to turn around the poor PS3 launch.

I doubt you'll ever be happy with your PS3 though Boz, you're like a grumpy old man at times.

A change to a controller comes at far less expense than a change to the main piece of hardware, the PS3 itself. Sixaxis controllers will not stop functioning, and I actually think I'll try to pickup one or two on the cheap.

I'll want a DS3 for myself for games, but when I have mates over to play 2vs2 on Pro Evo/FIFA, having rumble really isn't top priority. Having 4 controllers is - Yes my mates can bring their own PS3 controllers, but it's still nice to have multiple controllers in your own house.

The difference Larry, is that you get your Xbox 360 console either fixed or replaced with the new one FREE of charge. And I'm not sure what inferior components we are really talking about since I'm using my VERY FIRST Xbox 360 just fine. The problem was in cooling not components. With Xbox 360 I have absolutely no feeling I got screwed out of anything. With PS3, I paid $600 for a console that got discontinued and was being sold for $399. New users buying PS3 40gb got took for a ride with no BC compatibility and cheaper components in there but the machine is less loud. DS3 will now be standard in the package if you buy PS3 and anyone who bought the DS3 and has siaxis is pretty much bent over. One after another thing is with Sony. Only some people don't complain about these very inappropriate practices because they are blinded by their fanboyism in general. And Sony knows that. That's why they keep doing what they are doing.

If Sony was a company that appreciates it's userbase they would replace Siaxis controllers with DS3 ones to the existing owners or AT LEAST, refund/give credit to the userbase who bought the DS3 controllers recently. That's how you deal with consumers. You don't go and sell them first, then stick everyone else who has siaxis by discontinuing them and giving DS3 controllers for free with new PS3s. That's plain rippoff and anti-consumer practices.

I'm just in awe that people are fine with this really.

I agree. Its like that with anything cars, appliances, game consoles etc....

There will always be upgraded products from companies and if you buy something early that's the price you pay. Same thing happened to me when I got my non HDMI 360, my PSP fat and DS fat. I dont feel screwed at all lol

As I said above, a $50 controller or a $400 console. When you're planking out $400, getting a $50 DS3 for "free" doesn't really fit.

What did you expect them to do? Bundling the new controller with PS3's from here on in is like OBVIOUS practice number 1.

I guess MS should have replaced every 360 without HDMI, no? Or are you going to argue HDMI isn't really needed? Well rumble isn't really needed either. No game will function incorrectly, just like no 360 game requires HDMI.

Now lets see.... I can't seem to recall you kicking up a fuss like this when MS offered HDMI? Am I correct? I don't think the term "raped" was used then.

Sorry to bring in 360 comparisons, but really, IMO it's the only way to get Boz to realize some of what he is saying is pretty "double standardy".
