[PS3] Optical Audio Advice Please

Recommended Posts

I've just picked up my second PS3, having sold the last one after it developed a few problems (and I was skint).

Now I have a decent monitor setup, and relatively decent 2.1 speaker set (logitech's), and I have my PS3 hooked up to the monitor through HDMI > DVI.

Only problem is, no sound!

I was expecting this to be the case, as there's problems splitting the audio off from HDMI (so Ive been told), so my only real option is to run the audio through the optical out from the PS3 to some form of amp/device. Unfortunately, I didnt have the forsight to buy a 2.1 set that had an optical in, oh well, we live and learn.

I really dont want to have to buy a new monitor or speakers, Im really happy with them, what I was wondering is if anyone can recommend some intermediary between my speakers and the PS3.

Advice would be appreciated. Cheers.

Ehhrm... I ran my PS3 through HDMI>DVI on my monitor just fine, added some normal 3.5mm jack 2.1 logitech speakers and done.

All I did was go to the audio settings, select the audio through the composite cables, then go out to buy a red/white component to stereo jack plug (for about 2 euro's) and I had my sound. Worked perfectly, untill I got myself an HDTV :p

Ah, I didnt realise that you could have the audio running through the composite as well as running the video through HDMI.

Ill grab myself a little adapter and it should be fine. Thanks muchly (Y)

No problem ^^ it will look kinda messy, but it sure beats buying a new speakerset... I couldn't find one for a decent price at the time, so I went this way :p

Hi, could you advise me about whether or not this item could take sound from a Playstation 3 via a composite cable and play it through my speakers which have a male 3.5mm stereo connector? To clarify, i hope to plug my speakers into the 3.5mm stereo female port on the this item and plug the red/white leads on the composite cable into the red/white ports on your item.

It says 2 x RCA Female to 3.5mm so i don't know if the sound will go the other way. I know that sounds daft :( Is this the little adapter you are referring to in your post?

One thing that bugs me about the PS3 is that you can't have the audio coming out of HDMI AND Optical at the same time :(

Why would you want to?
