Ubuntu 7.10 doesn't see my partitions

Recommended Posts

Hey

I'm trying to install Ubunto 7.10, and it doesn't seem to be working. I'm using the live cd version. I get to step 4, and there are no partitions listed. I have two, one NTFS, which has Windows XP, and another one that is a fat 32, which has nothing on it. I partitioned my hd with partition magic, and then formated it with windows (Right clicked on G:, click format as fat32), but it doesn't see either one...what could I be doing wrong?

Thank you for any help :) Really want to try Linux again

Maybe if you format your Ubuntu partition to ext3 instead of fat32 that will work? Have you manually set your mount point for Ubuntu to \?

If you plan on using the fat drive for Linux, don't.

Remove that drive completely from the partition table to make it back to "unused" space, and the Ubuntu installer will happily install itself into it.

Unless I am not understanding exactly what you are after here...

I tries ext3 today, still doesn't work. and how would I set it to / ?

I just deleted, so its unused, I will give it a try tonight. Thanks for the help :) Also tries Shift 0.6.5, but it was going slow for some reason...not sure if its just my cd's or not...(Plus, only have 256 megs of ram lol)

And used the fat32 just to try to format the drive. Windows only gives fat32 and ntfs. forgot about pm

If the space is truly unassigned, then Ubuntu will see free space and offer to set itself up in there for you. No need to manually create and assign swap, /, /boot, /home or what-not.

Much easier that way (Y)

I just tried again, and it still isn't seeing it. Nothing is showing up..Partition magic sees it as unnasigned. Also...not even Windows see's it. Its suppose to be G:, or at least it was, and now windows only see's C:. I'm going to try the new version of Ubuntu, maybe will have better luck...I don't know...

Thanks for your help. Hopefully I can figure this out

When you have Ubuntu running as a Live CD, open a terminal and let us know the output of

sudo fdisk -l (that is a lowercase letter "L", not the number one)

Which will list the partition table out.

Hey

Been about a week, been busy...

Anyways, I tried that sudo fdisk -l and...it returns nothing. I went to gparted, and at the bottom it says 'no deviced found'. I'm guessing my hd isn't supported or something? I have had linux installed before. Though I don't think I had Ubuntu. I know I had Mandrave (7 I think) and Fedora Core (3) installed. I have a couple cd's left, guess I'll try mandriva or Fedora core 8, and see if they have the same problems.

Oh, and HD is a

Western Digital Hard Drives 7200 rpm 40 gig

Its about..6 years old I guess. Ran a hd test, and found no errors

Will let you know how mandriva or fedora core do *Crosses my fingers*

haha your telling me. I don't know why it sees nothing...I just have to hope that one of the other ones sees my hard drive...I do want a new hdd, but thats several months away. But like I said, Linux has been installed on this hard drive before, so I'm confused.

Well, I got Mandriva working! Using it right now. Pretty good so far! Come a long way from when I used it last (Mandrake). No problems so far, and easy to install things! (Ok, only installed Opera, but still).

Thanks for your help though Mark :)
