markwolfe Veteran Posted April 6, 2008 Veteran Share Posted April 6, 2008 Because you are using Microsoft VPC. It sounds like a cop-out answer, but MSVPC doesn't play very well with Linux. One known issue is color depth. MSVPC doesn't support the default color depth of 24bits. You have to set Linux to 16 or 32 to get a GUI in MSVPC. VMWare is often recommended as a preferred virtual environment to run Linux in.
HeyRatFans
Apparently a problem with Linux kernel 2.6.24. It uses some 686 specific long noops which Virtual PC doesn't implement. Same problem occurs on Transmeta Crusoe CPUs. Debian bug reports for those interested: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=463606 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=464962. Using the latest unstable 2.6.25-486 kernel seems to work ok with Virtual PC.
