Alfista
Hello guys. I was dying to change my harddisk to a WD 250 gb one but could not find it in my local store and had to go with samsung 250 gb... The process was completely easy and took me few mins though i did not have the right tools... First of all i did not backup anything from my original harddisk but just got 3 saved games to a flash disk. So when i plugged in my new 250 gb harddisk first i was asked to format which i did.. Than i thought the default firmware would be installed to my harddisk and i would have to update it to the latest one. I was ok with that of course. However to my suprise the 2.20 firmware was already installed when i plugged in my new harddisk which suprised me a lot. I thought i would enter my wireless network settings and password again but NONE. they were already there. My account information, my friends list. Everything was there obviously besides the games which was fantastic. So i did not have to reinstall anything besides saved games and yeah that long ass GT5 prologue. The extra space disk allowed me to put over 10 gbs of music and 5 gbs of pictures and now i have 200 gbs of extra space. I truly recommend this procedure for everyone so we can take advantage of more of PS3's functions. Cheers.

WastedJoker
Well done. I still prefer to stream multimedia to my PS3 from my laptop via 1TB+ of HDD space rather than opening up the PS3.
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 6, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted April 6, 2008 Yup one of the best decisions Sony made with the PS3 :p I'll get around to changing mine, since I went wired connection to router, I've been streaming ALL my music/videos though. However, with a 40GB drive, it will get eaten up by store content/demos/game cache soo enough!

Bhav
Yep all the essential settings are stored on the PS3's internal memory. Very well thought out by Sony :)
Alfista
yeah i believe the 40 gb will be eaten soon. I mean my GT5 took about 6gb. Devil May Cry takes 4.5 gbs... I want to install unreal to hdd now for faster loading times which sould be a few gbs too.. And hell if Metal Gear Solid also requires harddisk installation i am sure it would not be less than 5 gbs.. so here you go.. half of your hdd is eaten by 4 games... I am sure sooner or later even though you might not put music or pictures or videos to ur harddisk, the 40 gb will run out of space. Unless you delete all game info and other things when u complete a game.. Because even though i do not play devil may cry for 2 months i still have it on my hdd and wont ever delete it. +StevoFC MVC Posted April 6, 2008 MVC Share Posted April 6, 2008 Well done.I still prefer to stream multimedia to my PS3 from my laptop via 1TB+ of HDD space rather than opening up the PS3. you don't really open up the ps3 to change the HDD. and people asking for tutorials, it's in the manual that comes with the ps3... sn00pie
Have you noticed a speed difference when installing games/demos? I noticed a HUGE difference between my 60gb and 40gb models... i'm hoping theres a difference when you install bigger hdd's.

I was not in front of my PS3 when GT5 prologue was installed so i dont know. But still my hdd is 5400 RPM.. I doubt that by swapping harddisk there would be a performance boost.. But yet again there might.

Might just be the brand of hard drive you had in your 60. They aren't all the same, I believe mine were Fujitsu and Samsung.

houlty
i changed my 40gb to a 100gb i had lying around a few weeks ago. before long 40gb will soon run out. also, like someone else mentioned earlier, there was definitely a slow down in install speed going from 60gb to 40gb. it's not too bad though. If you still havent found eyecreate, go to the games tab, then full games, and then it was on the second page for me. Download size of 9016KB. EnzoFX
Generally, there should be a tiny performance increase going to a bigger HDD. The cache is usually bigger as well.
Alfista
ok just realized one thing I had NO idea that when the PS3 is in standby mode (only the red light on), you can turn it on by clicking the PS button on the sixaxis controller. Like a remote. Lol.. i honestly in my 4 month old PS3 experience, did not know that until i accidentaly pushed the button... Silly me :)
Bhav
Lol must feel great :D If that's the case, then I'm sure you'll come across a few other suprises too - the PS3 is a nifty machine. It's just that most people don't know what it can really do!
