Why can't PS3 do full screen for avi playback?

Recommended Posts

I have some anime at 1280x720 , normal makes it too big such that the video looks a bit zoomed into. The edges are cut off. Is there really no way to make it stretch to full screen?

That's what I'm refering to, there's only normal size and original. Normal makes everything too big, original is too small since the resolution is 1280x720 and there's a big black frame around it

When it plays on the PC does it have borders?

Most HD rips (720p and 1080p) have borders.

Mine play back in full screen, even when 'normal' makes it really tiny.

I guess the avi's you have are meant to have the borders.

I thought overscan was the TV's fault?

I have three size options I guess. The actual size one that puts a ridiculously small video in the middle of the 1080-lines image, another one that is the zoomed-up version (centered, I suppose, without modifying the aspect ratio) and another one that fits the video into the 16:9 screen (screwing the aspect ratio). At least the last two are pretty normal. If the video is already a 16:9, these last two options should look almost exactly the same

I didn't even know the PS3 had .avi playback. I plugged in a flash drive with some anime on it the other day and it couldn't recognize them.

Take a 16:9 video, play it at original size, pick a part of the edge of the picture and return to full screen, it chops of a small bit, this does not happen on dvd's, bd's and dloaded mp4's.

Put in memory stick, press triangle on memory stick icon, select display all and viola!

PS3 only automatically recognises video etc if put in the right folder, i.e:

.../VIDEO

.../MUSIC

.../PHOTO

Most HD rips (720p and 1080p) have borders.

When I full screen on PC there's only a very small black bar top and bottom, while keeping the right aspect ratio on my 16:10 monitor. PS3 either makes it too big like a zoom effect or too small with black borders around it.

I will try messing with my TV aspect ratio later to see what I can get

Check to see if your TV has a setting called "Full pixel".

Mines does under "Display Area".

By default my TV was on "Normal". Putting it on "Full Pixel" made things better for the PS3 over 1080p.

I didn't really understand the issue, but the content is 720p, and you want it to look its best on a 16x10 monitor? Your going to have black bars due to the different aspect ratios. Seems like that's the best option, Zoom in too much and you lose some of the image.

The edges are chopped off

I tried screwing around with TV settings but it doesn't matter because it's the PS3 that chops off the edges

That's normal. It's called overscan.

Its because the aspect ratio is different on your tv than in the video. It extends more to maintain the same aspect ratio. At least from the pics thats what it looks like I haven't messed around too much with the PS3 video playback.

One thing that always ****ed me off with videos and the PS3 is there is no progress bar, how the hell am I supposed to know where I am or how much further I need to go when fast forwarding or rewinding.

Do you have the option I talked about earlier?

Being able to put your TV on "full pixel"?

I have it on full aspect ratio, I also tried every other mode too. The PS3 is doing the cutting

If you cut a small sample off the file, say 10-20 seconds of playback, I'll try it out on my TV and see if it does the same!

(if you get the section you've shown above in there, it would help even more, but not necessary)

I'll try to get a section, what can I use to cut it?
