WastedJoker
Hello, I'm soon to be in the market to upgrade my TV to a 1080i/1080p LCD TV and I'm curious as to your opinions on which is the best format - 16:9 or 4:3. Is it a matter of personal preference or are games better in one format than the toher (as far as viewing area goes etc)?
Jason S. Global Moderator Posted April 8, 2008 Global Moderator Share Posted April 8, 2008 16:9 is the now and the future. All PS3 games are 16:9 afaik.
User6060
Fill that Screen up, why buy a widescreen lcd to watch thick black bars on the side?
kazuyette
all games nowadays are 16:9 and try to get a Full HD TV (check the resolution : 1920x1080 ) and not an "HD Ready" set .
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 8, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted April 8, 2008 Fill that Screen up, why buy a widescreen lcd to watch thick black bars on the side? You do realise 4:3 crops the picture? Or Zooms on it anyway. Buy a 16:9 TV. No questions. Plus the PS3 can actually use a zoom feature on your media anyway, meaning if you want, you can fill the whole screen when watching stuff - Only issue with that is, you do lose parts of the picture. What's your price range? I'll try to advise you on good sets within that range :) (I spent a bajillion hours researching HDTVs before I bought mine)

No that's completely wrong. If you're in UK/Europe you must get an HD Ready set! It will ensure the TV is compatible with the PS3 and all current and future HD devices. You can get HD Ready 1080p TVs anyway! (Outside of Europe, HD Ready doesn't mean the same thing. But in Europe TVs must meet certain requirements to be called 'HD Ready') Read this
houlty
i think he's meaning make sure its 1080p, as HD Ready could only be 720p...
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 8, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted April 8, 2008 I've got a KDL-40W2000, highly recommend it. (Y) I have that TV and also a KDL-40V3000. I use the 40V3000, the 40W2000 is downstairs. Both good sets, and both 1080p!
Bhav
i think he's meaning make sure its 1080p, as HD Ready could only be 720p... Well ok but he does say "not an HD Ready set". Funnily enough, 1080p HD ready TVs have their own logo lol (see the wiki link from my post above)

madd-hatter
The games are built around the thought that consumers will use 16:9.
SirDarkness
16:9 unless don't want HD then go 4:
soniqstylz
16:9 unless don't want HD then go 4:3 Nah, go 16:9 regardless. Even at standard def, it'll make use of widescreen DVD's and games. Hell, even PS2 did widescreen for many games.
giantpotato
I have no idea how anybody can actually be considering getting a 4:3 tv in this day and age. Almost all content currently being produced is 16:9.

+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 10, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted April 10, 2008 Get 4:3 if you only watching UKTV Gold  Buy a TV based on one channel.... Yeah it's true some shows on SD broadcasts still run in 4:3, but 95% do run in 16:9.

+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 10, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted April 10, 2008 where? UK. Sometimes depending on the channel, things like Family Guy will run in 4:3. Some european football has on occasion as well.

And Let's be clear for everyone, buy a TV with a "HD Ready 1080p" sticker on it and NOT a tv with a simple "HD Ready" sticker on it. thanks for the info anyway mate ;)
Coldgunner
the minimum requirements for HD ready is both 1080i and 720p, as well as HDMI. Marketing is dubbing 1080p as FullHD. The tv also has to be 16:9 I believe. there is also "HD Ready 1080p" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hd_ready http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_HD
