PL_ Veteran Posted April 10, 2008 Veteran Share Posted April 10, 2008 http://kotaku.com/377090/sony-wants-to-kno...acking-your-psp Sony Wants To Know Why You're Hacking Your PSPThe engineers at Sony can't be too thrilled with fighting the constant battle against PSP hackers, issuing firmware updates that "strengthen security" in a futile attempt to curb piracy and homebrew applications. Going by a recent survey commissioned by Sony Computer Entertainment, passed on to us by a reader who was asked to take part, the company seems to be looking into the reasons why PSP owners are opening up their portables. Sony reps call the survey a part of "ongoing PSP consumer research", attempting to learn more about the size of the PSP hacking population and the mentality behind the behavior. Questions like "Do you know of anyone who has "hacked," or modified, transferred and customized their PSP firmware and software?" were included elsewhere in the poll. We're following up with Sony to learn more about its research. Image at source. "Hacking a PSP makes me feel like a rebel" made me laugh
+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted April 10, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted April 10, 2008 I would bet that the main reason is not piracy but access to homebrew! Like why I modded my xbox. Not to pirate games but to run xbmc!

Coldgunner
Until they unlocked it, it was full resolution video, but now its mainly for backing up and loading on UMD images of the games I own.
zeta_immersion
hacking is not about piracy is about the freedom of having more than the company can offer .... is as simple as that ...
Ricardo Gil
Until they unlocked it, it was full resolution video, but now its mainly for backing up and loading on UMD images of the games I own. That's by far the most useful feature for me. Carrying UMD's and swapping them is really annoying.
The_Decryptor Veteran Posted April 10, 2008 Veteran Share Posted April 10, 2008 They could handle this very well, or very badly. If they look at the results of the survey and then implement that, that's the "very well" outcome.
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 10, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted April 10, 2008 If anyone thinks those only running homebrew > those running homebrew AND pirated games, then you're a bit naive. And I include running PS1 backups you DON'T own as piracy as well. Because, well, it is.

Seriously, I have seen that and it looks amazing. I am trying to get hold of an old Xbox desperately so I can do this, but no one around here is selling em...Grr. I would love to see soome kind of installation/imaging which could perhaps be DRM'd, so only legit UMD's could be used?
Brandon
Backing up games. UMD's aren't small like the DS games. I wouldn't want to carry more then one or two extra in my pocket

That would be a killer feature for me, load the UMD disks onto the PSP and allow me to load and play any one I want.

Rudy
why carry umds when my 8gb stick can fit tons of games on it (and load them faster than a UMD) the future of portable gaming is going to be flash memory and downloadable games (most of them are so small anyway)
CY:G
That survey asks all the WRONG questions, they wont find out anything like that!!! Better questions posted by some random kotaku commenter: Why are you taking games relased in other parts of the world now, instead of waiting an extra six months until it is released in your area? Why are you using your own property to play and use fantastic homebrew applications that are free? Some of the games offered on there are compressed nicely and will go on your memory stick. I know Syphon Filter is one of them, Patapon and soon to be Echochrome as well. Sony just need to get more 3rd party developers to embrace the store as well. Retail won't be happy with that though :/ Not that they probably earn all that much from PSP software, but any loss in retail, even the slightest will send them off on a rager. 1759
Running ISO's (PSP and PS) Emulators like NES/SNES/Genesis/Lynx Unlockable features (when you do the hold down R, when doing a power up). Basically, to keep away from using UMD's as often (and to have a portable games device, that can play many of the older consoles).
Julius Caro
Considering they are actually taking the right steps with the PS3, I don't know why they are even wondering. Anyway, my opinion is that an unhacked PSP sucks !

troist
If they let me copy my UMDs onto my PSP and run homebrew software I'd more than happily switch back, but they aren't going to do that :p
