PS3 Firmware 2.30 available April 15th / New Store Walkthrough Video

Recommended Posts

According to the Japanese PlayStation website, the PlayStation store revamp will occur on April 25th 2008, which is a Tuesday. Firmware 2.30 will be released allowing access to the new store. The firmware update will be released in the Evening (Japanese time). There has been no announcement of when the new store will be available in North America or Europe other than in mid-April. It is likely that the new firmware will be available in Europe and US on Tuesday too.
Rough Japanese Translation:

Sony PlayStation 3 online service will be renewed on April 15th, 2008 (Tuesday) evening. This will renew and expand the store by adding functionality described below:

* New interface and navigation improvements

* Preview video content using still images

* New download categories added

After the update, PS3 System Software 2.30 will be available.

To promote the new store, SCEJ will be offering a "PS treasure hunt" running from April 15th to May 12 2008. This will allow every 50th user to the store to download a "hidden" application or game, most likely for free. Maybe this is the suprise SCEE/SCEA mentioned upon release of the new store.

You go Grace!

Perfect.

Smooth transitions and it looks snappy. Video previews in-store are needed, stops you having to download a trailer then exit to watch.

Nice one Sony (Y)

Now just get everything else out :p

ps. I hope this codec update for DTS-HD means DTS in MKVs will work! If so it means no more converting to AC3 5.1 in MKV2VOB!

both DTS-HD and DTS-HD MA support:) hope they add .mkv support!

MKV support would be awesome for 1080p content! :woot:

For 720p content it's not really needed if you don't mind spending 1 min or so muxing content in MKV2VOB.

I don't think we'll ever see native MKV support though :/ At least not until it's used for a lot more "legal" things. Sony/MS seem to prefer using MP4/WMV for HD content.

I hope Sony add x264 AVI support soon though. x264 AVI files offer far better size:quality compression that standard Divx/AVI does.

I don't understand this.

I have a last gen receiver, and some of the videos can do DTS anyway, so I assumed for the current gen receivers the DTS-HD will be used when you select the option in blu ray menu. So is this update enables ps3 internally decode uncompress to DTS-HD or something else, could someone explain to me please? many thanks.

Hidden application or game? That sounds interesting... do they mean content already on the PS store, or they're adding something like Home to 1 in 50 PS3s?

It says April 15th in the title, then 25th on the first line, then 15th again near the bottom, which lol.

I think that 25th is a typo since it says that the 25th is a Tuesday, which it isn't but the 15th is.

I wonder what interface and navigation improvements they can make. Both are pretty simple :s

I take it you haven't seen the video and screenshots of the new Store then?

No I have, and its freakin sweet. But I didn't think they were talking bout the Store there. I suppose it only makes sense that they are.
