Weird VNC issue

Recommended Posts

I took the plunge into Ubuntu 8.04 last nite and so far I'm liking it. Got ampache set up, but remote desktop is a whole other beast.

I enabled it from the menu in Ubuntu, but when I attempt to use VNCviewer on XP (at work) I can't get in.

I set up the port forwarding, and now I can get to the point that it prompts me for a password (not username), if i put in the correct one VNCviewer just minimizes itself to the tray and doesn't show me anything.

If I put the wrong password it tells me it was wrong and offers to reconnect me.

I'm obviously getting through to the VNCserver on Ubuntu, why won't it give me my desktop?

Also, I tried with TightVNC viewer as well and it hangs on this screen once I send the password:

Just a note (that may be obvious, and you know this already), but 8.04 is still being finalized, and may have some bugs. If you find a legitimate bug that hasn't already been documented, please report it to the Ubuntu team (Y)

from your ubuntu setup, check the port and try to confirm that port for outbound connection by visiting http://canyouseeme.org/ if router, firewall is blocking, you will get to know. you can then carry it from there.

Thanks, When I get home I will try that.

I know for a fact that my router is forwarding the ports correctly, so it could be a firewall issue. I don't know whether 8.04 ships with a default firewall enabled or not, I didn't install one or set one up.

Do you know if it ships with a firewall/how to configure it?

Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

---Scratch that, found it:

Ubuntu 8.04 Beta includes ufw (Uncomplicated Firewall), a new host-based firewall application configurable from the command line which is designed to make administering a firewall easier for end users while not getting in the way of network administrators.

Also, its apparently not on by default, so I don't know what could be stopping it

To see all firewall rules:

sudo iptables -L

to list all in/out/forward rules.

If you prefer a GUI, Ubuntu may have one by default. If not, I have used "firestarter" a few years ago, and it should still be a valid app to install to manage your firewall through a bit more point-n-click type of interface.

Much appreciated. I'll look into this.

New Development....

I got home and discovered I had a ton of messages asking me if I want to allow my work machine to connect to my desktop.

How can I make it not ask. It's not very useful as a remote desktop if someone has to be here to tell it yes every time I connect.
