curme
I have no window borders. I tried, well just about everything, but this seems to be the most popular fix: Ubuntu Desktop effects - How to fix the missing titlebar: 1. Open up a terminal and type sudo su (enter your password) 2. Type gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf 3. From the xorg.conf file, find the section called Section "Device" and just before EndSection, add the following and save the file: Option "AddARGBVisuals" "True" Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True" 4. Here is an example of an edited Section (your Section may vary): Section "Device" Identifier "Videocard0" Driver "nvidia" VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation" BoardName "GeForce 8800" Option "AddARGBVisuals" "True" Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True" EndSection 5. Restart Ubuntu and the titlebar with related window decorations should reappear It didn't work. Oddly, Advanced Desktop Settings>General Options>Hide Skip Taskbar Windows worked for a while, until I restarted my pc. I tried to install Emerald, to see if one of it's themes would over-ride something in compiz and fix it, it didn't I think I've tried just about everything, but I can't seem to get my window borders back. I tried: gtk-window-decorator --replace & and sudo dpkg --purge compiz-core compiz-extra compiz-fusion-plugins-extra compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-gnome compiz-gtk compiz-plugins compizconfig-settings-manager libgnome-compiz-manager0 python-compizconfig beryl emeraldsudo apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-manager I've tried just about everything! Can anyone help me get my window borders back!
osxdude
Ok. Start up a terminal window (either gnome-terminal or similar or ctrl+alt+f1 through f4) and load "metacity". No sudo, nothing but "metacity".
curme
Ok. Start up a terminal window (either gnome-terminal or similar or ctrl+alt+f1 through f4) and load "metacity". No sudo, nothing but "metacity". I tried: curme@curme-desktop:~$ metacityWindow manager warning: Screen 0 on display ":0.0" already has a window manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current window manager. curme@curme-desktop:~$ replace --metacity The program 'replace' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing: sudo apt-get install mysql-server-5.0 bash: replace: command not found curme@curme-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install metacity [sudo] password for curme: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done metacity is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. I checked Synaptic, but it said I already have Metacity installed. I tried to install a theme using Emerald, and the theme didn't load.
atlef
Have you opened the compizconfig manager? Do so, and look for window decoration, and you should be able to set things straight. atlef.
markwolfe Veteran Posted April 13, 2008 Veteran Share Posted April 13, 2008 Not sure what happened to go wrong. Did it work as a LiveCD? Did it work on first boot? The window borders are the job of the Window Manager, which is what these other posts are talking about when they talk about Emerald or Metacity. Only one can be managing windows at a time, and if something is buggered when you changed (or on initial setup) that might be causing the problem. mitch00
You don't want "--replace metacity" it should be "metacity --replace". Mind you, you won't get any fancy 3d effects with metacity, but your window borders will come back.
Elv13
What is the result of the command glxinfo? What is your graphic card (what kind of 8800)? You use Ubuntu 7.10 or 8.04? If the answer of the last question is 7.10 and you have a carte newer than september 2007, download the latest NVIDIA drover on nvidia.com, chmod 777 <driver name> in a terminal and execute it after killing GDM (sudo /etc/init.d/ddm stop and then sudo ./NVIDIA*)
Juts
Do you have emerald installed? If so try hitting alt-F2 and running this command from a terminal: emerald --replace It might just be one hyphen, i cant remember.
curme
Thanks for all the help, but nothing worked so far. When I try "emerald --replace" and when I try "metacity --replace" I get my window borders, but obviously no cool effects. I tried to reinstall my nvidia drivers by checking and unchecking "Unrestricted Drivers". curme@curme-desktop:~$ command glxinfo name of display: :0.0 display: :0 screen: 0 direct rendering: Yes server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation server glx version string: 1.4 server glx extensions: GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_SGIX_fbconfig, GLX_SGIX_pbuffer, GLX_SGI_video_sync, GLX_SGI_swap_control, GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap, GLX_ARB_multisample, GLX_NV_float_buffer, GLX_ARB_fbconfig_float, GLX_EXT_framebuffer_sRGB client glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation client glx version string: 1.4 client glx extensions: GLX_ARB_get_proc_address, GLX_ARB_multisample, GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_EXT_import_context, GLX_SGI_video_sync, GLX_NV_swap_group, GLX_NV_video_out, GLX_SGIX_fbconfig, GLX_SGIX_pbuffer, GLX_SGI_swap_control, GLX_NV_float_buffer, GLX_ARB_fbconfig_float, GLX_EXT_fbconfig_packed_float, GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap, GLX_EXT_framebuffer_sRGB GLX version: 1.3 GLX extensions: GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_SGIX_fbconfig, GLX_SGIX_pbuffer, GLX_SGI_video_sync, GLX_SGI_swap_control, GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap, GLX_ARB_multisample, GLX_NV_float_buffer, GLX_ARB_fbconfig_float, GLX_EXT_framebuffer_sRGB, GLX_ARB_get_proc_address OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 8800 GTX/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW! Elv13
You can upgrade using internet ou using CD, you will be able to keep your settings, but you can go to the nvidia website and download a more recent version of NVIDIA driver for linux, the one in 7.10 is 8 month old. Even if your card should be supported, updating the driver should help.

curme
^^^ Did you really need to quote the full output of glxinfo in your reply? In retrospect, you're right. I could of attached a .txt file. That would of been the more sensible solution. My only excuse is that NASA is launching a Pegasus missile here, and I've been pulling all kinds of weird 12-hour shifts providing comms and trying to learn Ubunutu at the same time! I'm just tired and not thinking right lately, so I apologize. The mission is Thursday morning Kwajalein time (I'm working 3am to 3pm), so after that I'll get some rest and hopefully think clearer! (Because now I'm trying to figure out what "init 3" is so I can install the Nvidia drivers in 'Recovery Mode' because Nvidia doesn't like the 7.10 GUI)
tmahmood
Install Fusion-Icon from here > http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=316...amp;postcount=8 it will be installed as 'Compiz Fusion Icon' in Applications>System Tools, now you can customize which window manager to use, Metacity or Emereld or edit setting easily. Do you have emerald themes installed *properly*? as Sometime I had problems that Window decorations were not properly installed and all the window borders were all transparent, it looked like there were no window borders. Go to Emerald Theme manage using the fusion icon and try to customize few settings , Specially the opacities of the border colors. As for 'init 3' Linux is a multi user system, 3 is single user mode, 5 is multi user mode with X server use sudo init 3 to drop into single user mode, after doing your things just restart your system or use sudo init 5 I hope these helps :)

I didn't have a problem with it being posted originally. But the reply to your post originally duplicated the entire contents just for a brief comment. I don't think that smooth3006 originally realized that Neowin duplicates "code" content (as the forum doesn't duplicate "quote" content that looks similar). curme
I tried to install the new Nvidia drivers, but on reboot I got an "failed to start the x server" error message stating that my "Kernel module does not match". The only way I can get into Ubuntu (and using metacity only) is to "Sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" then "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart", but I have to do that each time. When I try "sudo nvidia-settings" I get "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server." I try the "nvidia-xconfig", it says everything is ok, but the I get the same problems. Maybe I should just wait until Hardy Heron come out and re-install? As I stated earlier, I'm on dial-up and the updates literally takes days, so if I'm going to re-install, I might as well make it worth while. GatorV
"Kernel module does not match", This looks like your driver that you downloaded doesn't support the kernel you are running, have you tried Envy?
curme
"Kernel module does not match",This looks like your driver that you downloaded doesn't support the kernel you are running, have you tried Envy? I installed Envy. What a pain. I'm on dial-up using a proxy the US Army provide, so the only way I can download updates is through Synaptic, not the Terminal window. Anyway, I got Envy installed and my Nividia drivers updated! Yay! Still no window borders. Boo! I created a new profile and log into it to see if a fresh start would work. It defaulted to metacity. When I enabled the Nvidia drivers under the Restricted Drivers to get my fancy effects, I lost my window borders. Emerald work for a second or two, until I tried compiz. Then I couldn't get emerald to work again. I'm going to try to unistall and re-install compiz again. Well, after I try to install the fusion-icon to see if that does anything. EDIT: It's weird because my cube effect and dual monitor works fine.
curme
I think my reinstalling/installing compiz, along with Envy, did the trick. I have wobbly windows with borders now! The only problem is, I'm afraid to change my theme from "human", but there are some really cool themes out there! I just really don't want to spend days doing this again. :( I'm afraid to even try emerald.
