PS3 has hidden self cleaning option

Recommended Posts

It says to do the same as the 60GB version. Let us know if it works.

I tried all possabilities while not vertical, ill try it a bit later, since i definatly need to dust it out

Perhaps you sat on your X360 controller which turned the X360 on and you mistakenly took the X360 sound for the PS3 one? :o

You never know - strange things happen..

Doubt it, I'm not that retarded.

a novel idea to avoid the dust is hold a damp rag by the exhaust port(s) to help capture the dust so its not being let loose into your house again :)

I usually spray can air on one side and hold vacuum cleaner on the other side. In and out I mean out and in.

Wow, Im not going to try that too often as I really dont want to stress the fans, but a good find for sure.

I wish the 360 did have that, when I recently opened mine it was like a dustbunny conference in there.

When all people talk about this being all new and creative.. it's not new.

Check out servers. Or, check out HP ProLiant servers.

When you first switch them on the rear fan sounds like a jet engine for 5 seconds or so. And I'm not kidding. The PS3's loud fan is just a whisper in comparison.

As cool as this is, it does worry me that if this is so helpful, why didn't Sony just tell us this?

Though I'm sure it wouldn't be built in if it was harmful.

And it seems that you can do it on the 60GB too, but it requires a little more effort.

Placing it vertically normally.

Turning it off.

Then holding it upside down vertically.

Wait 15-20 seconds.

And it does the whole fan noise thing.

You can see a video for 60GB here.

Hmm, thats interesting. If the PS3 "knows" when it is vertical/upside down or maybe even horizontal, does that mean it has some sort of motion sensing built into it?

I suppose it has a SIXAXIS built in :p

I wonder if they new SKUs with DualShocks have rumble in the console itself too :D

It might have what my macbook has which is a sudden motion sensor to help protect it if it were dropped (ie it shuts itself down)

I don't know, it's just a guess :p

Yeah I was thinking that. How the PS3 knows that its upside down??

I'm a little scared to try that on my 60GB. :s

Probably has some sensor like the 360.

It has one? why? where? when?

Its strange, my ibm laptop has one too - so it can pause the harddrives from spinning when its in shock or something :p

gyroscopes everywhere..

Yeah, a small gyro bearing is not space technology ...

Why? Because it needs to show the LED's light properly when it's vertical or horizontal

Where? Inside

When? Since launch.

I can't believe a topic on cleaning the inside of your PS3 is 3 pages long  (edit: correction, I just made it 4 pages :pinch:)

In comparison when in-game xmb/home hits, they'll probably be shorter topics than this :p

I doubt the PS3 has a sensor in it, it hardly has a use for one.

I would thing that when you turn it upside down since there's no vents the hot air can't get out. Perhaps the processor(s) are on that end of the PS3 (as the other end has the drive). Also, if it's a heat issue that explains why it would take a fairly short time for the hot air to accumulate if it's been on for a while. If that's true then the fans are only spinning up because it detects a rise in temperature. In which case, if anything you'd be damaging the PS3 by subjecting it to those temps..

Just some thoughts :p
