Psystar Selling Hackintosh PCs, Called OpenMac

Recommended Posts

that won't end long imo, apple is going to end it soon!

hey nice avatar btw ;)

Thanks!

Apple's success = tight control of product, ensuring a specific level of user experience.

While I'm not against people modding their hardware/software, OS X really belongs on Apple hardware.

Running OS X on a generic box is like kissing your sister.

It really depends from what I have observed there OS X on some generic boxes can be every bit as good as apple hardware or better.

Lolz.

Can I run updates on my OpenMac?

The answer is yes and no. No because there are some updates that are decidedly non-safe. Yes because most updates are not non-safe. It's best to check on InsanelyMac for this information but when in doubt don't update it. You may have to reinstall your OS X if it is a non-safe update.

LOL, probably some regular hackintosh-artist on InsanelyMac.

I'm a member there as well and there's regular discussion about running OS X on generic boxes.

it doesn't take a genius to get osx installed on a pc and i see nothing wrong with doing so " for testing purposes only " ;)

I think it's a great idea this. I hope they manage to fend Apple off and keep selling. Anything to make Apple get a little more realistic with their pricing.

That sort of system is what users have been crying out for, for a long a time - a mid range tower with a decent graphics card! Mac Pro is just too expensive and the iMac is great but the graphics cards date really quickly on them!

for what you get the pricing on the mac pro isn't that bad. The problem is that most people don't need a dual Xeon system, they are professional workstations. What they need is a tower for consumers using core 2 duo.

they're back on, but now it's an Open Computer not an Open Mac..... lol

As long as Apple still forbids OS X on non-Apple x86 hardware, they won't last. And even if they're allowed to continue, I'm not sending off dollars to some random noname outfit with...

actually, correction. They fixed up their store; there are more products.

I'm still not buying that whole "unmodified OS X Leopard kernels" claim. I wouldn't be surprised if they took those hacked ISOs floating around torrent sites and used that on their boxes. Makes the whole "add $150 for Leopard" more of a scam if this was the case.

The BIOS emulation technique exists and they claim to use that.

I am curious about this... I couldn't see anything on the site; does anyone know if they ship to the UK. I may just take a dive if they do...!

Good content for the blog!

    • Well Statcounter doesn't count Edge users as Chrome. It uses the user agent and my understanding is the Brave browser users the standard Chrome user agent for privacy/tracking reasons and compatibility so that would help the Chrome numbers. Some Firefox users change the user agent for again compatibility reasons. I am going to totally guess the Chrome numbers are inflated some 5 or 6%.

    • Well duh. But it's not their agenda, they just push it forward.
    • Easier to move to Firefox, either Zen Browser or LibreWolf (which includes it by default)
