PCLOS Screen Resolution

Recommended Posts

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 920NW 19 inch monitor. Its native resolution is 1440*900..

By default, the screen resolution in pclos 2008 gnome is set as 1440*900.. However, I have thick black patches running on either side of the screen.. The screen resolution seems to be lesser than what it says..

This problem was there in Ubuntu Fiesty also.. But is not there in the beta versions of Hardy.. Any solution?

Could it be a graphics driver issue?

Running XFdrake from the terminal will tell you what driver you are using, what screen you have (with its native resolution) and what resolution it is set at. Post it here.

Thanks for your reply

I have got an auto adjustment button... This works in making sure that the monitor display is centered and takes up the entire screen area for the correct resolution.. This doesn't work now as the screen resolution itself is not right... What I mean to say is that even though a quarter of the screen is blank at the left side, the visible portion doesn't look contracted or stretched..

The width of my monitor is about 16.2 inches... But the actual displayed size is only about 12.4 inches wide.. And height is about 10.1 inches...

Card is on board Intel.. I am able to move the picture left and right using the monitor buttons.. But there is no provision for resizing.. But even if there was the text would appear stretched.. So I don't think using the monitor buttons may help..

Am I making sense?

Right...try either altering xorg.conf (to force a higher resolution). I also think there is a way to get a higher resolution in control centre.

The problem is that the control center says that my resolution is 1440*900.. Err.. Alter xorg.conf??

This could be a problem with your ModeLines in your xorg config. I used to have this problem with my 20" 1680x1050, however Xorg seems to do it for me now. Anyways, I had to use an X tool that modified the modeline for your monitor, and you could adjust the horizontal and vertical stretching. I believe the tool is called "xvidtune"

check to see if that is around on your system or in your X11 bin directory. Try that out.

I believe you can set up advanced monitor settings in XFdrake. You set the monitor to custom (or something like that) and it'll ask you the settings.

Where could I obtain a copy of XFdrake for my Ubuntu 7.10, please? I tried Synaptic but no results.

@Faub

XFdrake is just a terminal command..

@simsie

All the settings in XFdrake are as they should be.. So I can't ascertain what to change..

@bolerodan

xvidtune has an option called auto.. This is what I tried to use.. But it displays an error whenever I try to apply the recommendations.. Something to the effect: "This setting is not supported for your hardware configuration."

@simsie and bolerodan

Thanks for all your help mates.. :) I am moving back to Kubuntu Hardy beta.. There everything is go.. I hope to move back to PCLOS as soon as this error is resolved.. PCLOS is definitely a lot faster than Kubuntu but I can't use it for now as this problem makes me want to pull my hair out..

Oh right iforgot to mention. Dont use the auto one. It seems that it does not work. What you would have to do is manually stretch / move things vertically.. grab the values you want.. then edit your modeline in your xorg conf to result the changes.

Xvidtune never really worked 100% in that aspect.

But good luck with your ubuntu journeys non the less

He said that he was using Ubuntu.....

No he didn't...he said he also had the issue on Ubuntu 7.10, but oh well, he's using 8.04 now which works.

Yup.. XFdrake doesn't work on Ubuntu as it is Debian based..

8.04 really rocks! All the problems which I had with previous versions of any distribution are absent here.. Enjoying!
