Convince me to buy a PS3

Recommended Posts

So, GTAIV action is IMMINENT, and I honestly don't know if I can wait for a PC version (If there is a PC version...).

So, i'm hoping some of you PS3 owners can convince me to buy one. I've seen 40gb versions on newegg etc. for 400 dollars US, which isn't too bad.

What other games are worth checking out? How reliable are they ? (4 of my friends have 360s, and 4 of them have red rings, which is just awful).

Is there any hope for a mouse/keyboard control combo in the future?

Anything you think will sway me over to the side of PS3, i'm all for.

p.s. I have a 42 inch LCD w/ HDMI input that is DYING to get some action.

PS3 sounds like a good choice for your HDTV. Its reliability is the best and there is mouse+keyboard controls for UT2K7. I say buy it, just in time for GTAIV.

If you're worried about reliability issues with the 360, then you shouldn't be. They took care of the hardware problems they were having and it's gotten a lot better within the past several months.

Frankly, I really do love my PS3, but I get far more game time out of my 360 simply from the amount of games available. Ideally both are nice to have, but if you need to go for only one I would suggest the 360.

There should be some PS3/GTA4 bundles/offers? PC version is unannounced and if you're into GTA games, I think you'll have a hard time holding off with the reviews GTA4 is getting - It's going to blow minds :|

Maybe not official, as I believe only Europe is getting an official bundle.

It's either going to be all about the games for you, or a mix of games and multimedia.

If it's the prior I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a PS3 just now as long as overall you do like franchises the PS3 will offer - No doubt a large JRPG inventory eventually (once PS3 picks up in Japan), following in the PS2s steps.

Reason being the PS3 is unrivalled as a media player due to the codec support it has, bundled with a BR drive for movies and a fantastic DVD upscaler.

If you're only into the games, then it's a harder decision as right now the PS3 has less on it's plate than the 360 - In terms of overall AAA games, not taking any genre specifics into account.

So if you can give me some input on what games you like and whether or not you are into anything movie/tv show/music related I can help out a bit more.

I use my PS3 often, but right now it's more for playing movies than it is games - I don't mind though for two main reasons

a) My PS3 purchase would have been unavoidable anyway, I'm too invested in certain PS exclusive franchises not to chase up their sequels - MGS4 being the first one.

and

b) I have lots of TV Show/Movies to take advantage of anyway, especially a lot of HD stuff nowadays.

My moneys worth has been had and long past, just on media functionality with my PC/TV. That's me though, everyone is different.

For the record I'm buying GTA4 for my PS3, as I have friends to play online with, and partly just to build up my PS3 library which doesn't have much in it just now. No R&C/Uncharted yet which is a bit of a crime :/

One of the main reasons I got a PS3 (other than the games) is that I have everything in one machine. I can play Blu-rays, DVDs, Games a Media Center all that without having a lot of players in my TV stand.

They are very reliable, I have 2 PS3, 40GB and 60GB, and they are on almost all day Folding, Gaming, Watching Blu-ray or DVD (I'm not the only one that use them in my house) and they run fine, without any problem. The 40GB is quieter and cooler than my 60 GB.

I have tried a keyboard on the XMB and works fine. you can use it to send message on the browser etc. I haven't tried a mouse on the XMB. Not sure if it works. Like Hanif said UT3 support mouse/keyboard.

Just check the games that are released and the ones that are coming, all the PS3 features and decide if its for you. I really love my PS3s.

I swapped over to PS3, I traded in my 360 and I haven't been happier.

I've placed all my movies/music on my 320GB internal drive.

I got all my favourite games that I had for the 360 that I could get for my PS3 (except Test Drive Unlimited :( )

Plus I just purchased Time Crisis 4 to keep me going until I get GTA4, which I ordered over at Amazon.com. The PS3 doesn't have region lock, so I can get the un-edited version. But it shouldn't worry you because your in Texas :p

But I would go for the PS3 all the way :)

Since it seems that GTA IV is a determining factor in you purchasing a console now, it's worth noting that the 360 version of GTA IV will have some exclusive bonus content. Also, the reliability of 360 should not be of great concern if you're buying a new one. I know there are many accounts of hardware failure still going on today, but that's mostly from people whose 360 was manufactured earlier than 2007. The problem has been resolved, so if you are buying a new 360, you shouldn't run into any issues.

With that being said, the PS3 would be an excellent buy as well. It can play blu-ray movies which will look amazing on your LCD.

not necessarily I was just reading a over at NeoGAF called "My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread and people are reporting that the new falcon chip 360s are still breaking down :( A member even made a graph of all the 360s that are breaking in that topic. Here is the latest one:

It's chart update time! Will post this disclaimer from my last post:

These numbers wont match up to the list post simply because unless I could tell when your 360 died / was replaced, you weren't included in the figures. That's basically anyone that just posted to say that their 360 died last year some time or they've had x dead 360s and gave no more information. Also, if you posted to say your 360 was acting up and never came back to confirm its death / shipment / getting a new one... you aren't included either.

Don't forget that NPD US numbers are simply included to give a rough idea of how many 360s are out there for each particular month.

In the figures so far are 1155 dead / replaced 360s, 3 of which were falcon models (rs7k got 3 machines with bad drives from a store). So that there's no confusion, there are a couple of new falcon deaths but they will appear in April's stats.

From now on I'll be splitting the deaths by original / refurbs and every month I'll give a breakdown of what killed them / why they were replaced. (Oh, and let me know if the chart is too big / small as I had to change it. I might also decide to only include the last x months as there's a lot of data now.)

This Month

RRoD: 27

Drive: 5

Freezing: 3

Checkerboard:2

Other Red Light: 2

Noisy: 1

PSU: 1

12 of the 17 refurb failures were due to RRoD.

Some of those people are on their 8th RROD (N) I feel for these people as I am on Xbox 360 #4 but coincidentally mine never RROD they all had DVD drive problems. My lastest 360 I got back from MS run as smooth as silk now. Runs better and quieter than any of my previous 360s ever did (Y) :)

The 360 is a great console and alot of my friends have it. My friend who works at a video game store tells me alot of people want to come in to trade everything 360 related that they have for a PS3. I find this interesting and I hope Sony focuses more on gaming now that blu-ray has won the format war. I am particularly disappointed with the the delay of Home and I hope in game XMB is available ASAP!!!

A nice thing I have done with my PS3 is use it as a replacement for a media center. I can access my videos on my hard drive through my home network and watch dvd i have ripped to my hard drive and watch through the network. Saves on hdd space on the ps3 and you'll never have to get up and try to search for that darn movie again. :)

I dont see why you need convincing. Either you want it or you dont. If your hoping people will say "get it" like you stated then obviously youve already decided to a large extent you want one.

As one person suggested I'd prefer a 360 for the games currently but thats personal preference and I'm buying a PS3 as well around tax time anyway.

I know you want to be convinced to buy a PS3 but I just saw a new incentive just in case all the 360 posts in here swayed you.

I guess Best Buy is running a new promotion when you buy any model of the Xbox 360 and GTA IV (for the 360 of course), you get a $50 gift certificate.

The main reason for me is that the PS3 has a ton of AAA content that can only be played on the PS3 unlike the 360 whose games always release on PC or port to PC eventually and are almost always better on PC.

Thanks for flame on that one.

Everybody else has been fine this whole time, mentioning great points for both. Biased and unhelpful comments (to be determined by the original poster) aren't needed here.

I'm intrigued by the "media" features people keep talking about. Can you hook your ps3 up to a router and share files that way?

Also, what are "Home" and "XMB" ? Is it true that the 40GB model out now does not support backwards compatibility with PS2 games? Are the HDs swappable, like, can you replace it with a larger cap. HD ?

Thanks for all the input thus far guys.

If you are using Windows, you can use media player as a media server.

Here are some links to Wikipedia which describe XMB and Home.

XMB

Home

You can any size 2.5 inch laptop hard drive. And yes, the 40 GB system is not backwards compatible.

You can get bigger HDD, 40gb doesn't support backward compatibility, Home is a new social networking, like Second Life and XMB is the user interface and main menu.

Out of order, i know :p

Funny you should mention that as he's debating on whether to buy a PS3 for GTA4, or wait until GTA4 comes out on PC...

Reasons I can think of:

- Blu-Ray

- A few key franchises (Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, etc) if you're into them

- Good hardware

- Free online play

GTA4 will also be on the 360. If you like the PS3 games more, go for it. If you like the 360 games more, go for it. If you can wait for the PC version... wait. There's reasons for all the platforms.

I believe it is the only Profile 2.0 player currently available, making it future-proof as far as standards go. It also received an update that allows the system to decode DTS HD-MA and bitstream it as PCM which means that the player can decode both lossless codecs currently used by studios.

The MediaServer capabilities are amazing. If you're using Vista on your home PC, it automatically shares content [you may have to set up extended directors to share all of your content, but it is turned on by default]. If you're using XP, it isn't too hard to set up either. I haven't used it extensively yet, but from everything I have read and done so far, it looks great. Read audioboxer's thread about displaying HD content on the PS3 for further information about what you can accomplish with this.

Don't forget that will upscale your current DVD collection quite well, too. An upscaled DVD will never equal its HDM counterpart but it will be enough to hold you over until it's release (or purchase).

The 360 has convinced me that consoles are the way to go for gaming. After gaming with achievements, gamer score, a consistent friends list across all games, online match making, co-op, and VoIP I don't want to go back to my PC and the headache of drivers and expensive hardware upgrades. The 360 has helped me realize that there is a lot more to games than just purdy graphics; Crysis should have proved that to all of you that paid hundreds if not thousands to upgrade your gaming PCs.

I also have a hard time convincing myself to buy a PS3. It seems like game developers are targeting the 360 as the primary platform. The 360 also has more exclusives that will not show up on the PS3, while the PS3 has some exclusives that have been rumored to make the jump to the 360 some time in the future.

I have tried convincing myself to get a PS3 simply as a Blu-Ray player, but I don't really need one right now. It is hard to justify spending $400 on something that is probably just going to collect dust, like my Wii, which was much cheaper. The 360 is just as much a media machine as a PS3, excluding Blu-Ray. I still prefer my PC hooked up to a TV since I rely on BeyondTV for all of my TV watching needs.
