KitCh
From the look of things your desktop has failed to start. See if you can manually start xdm but doing one of the following: 1. become root (su / password) and then type "/etc/init.d/xdm restart" - That's one way. [sudo /etc/init.d/xdm restart] 2. As a normal user, type "startx", and that will do the same thing.
Harlem39s Finest
thanks for replying KitCh, i'll try to see if it works...
Borbus
Oh no! A scary command prompt! :p Ubuntu uses gdm I think not xdm so you would need to restart gdm: /etc/init.d/gdm restart (as root) If you have an nvidia card you could try running nvidia-xconfig to make a new xorg config file before trying to start X. deadite66
you could try sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and choose your card, if it still doesn't work try again but choose vesa then run the restricted drivers manager (assuming vesa works ok)
Harlem39s Finest
i'll try that deadite66 ! thanks.
Harlem39s Finest
ok, so i typed in /etc/init.d/gdm restart the nvidia driver wouldn't work so i chose vesa one, then i "unrooted" myself and typed startxfor few seconds i was very happy until i found out i can't adjust my screen resolution and refresh rate ^^^ what to now ? will these do the trick or do i have to do some ninja command typo of stuff to get it working ? Borbus
Interesting... what card do you have? You should contact nvidia support if the nvidia drivers won't work. You could try the free "nv" drivers instead of the proprietary nvidia drivers.
Harlem39s Finest
8800(evga)gts 320mb (old gts) "You could try the free "nv" drivers instead of the proprietary nvidia drivers." how do i do it ?

deadite66
run System / Administration / 'Hardware Drivers' from the gnome menu and tick the nvidia driver if its listed there.
Harlem39s Finest
^^^ i got an empty list with a message "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system"
deadite66
trouble with the nv driver is its the open source version so you won't get the full functionality from the card. try installing the nvidia driver from the add/remove (as seen in your 2nd picture) , it should be the same as installing from the restricted-manager (i think)
Harlem39s Finest
i installed the driver from 2nd screenshot, and still can't change the resolution, do i have to "restart" or something ?
tmahmood
if you've installed a driver, then yes you need to restart :p
Borbus
You only need to restart X, though. You only need to reboot the kernel when you actually update the kernel.
