Danrarbc
Yes, you physically remove it and replace it with a faster one :p *-Rich- *Warning: May break your PS3 ;) Seriously though, unless Sony switches to a different speed drive in newer models it probably won't happen (which I doubt they'll do)
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 26, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted April 26, 2008 The faster the drive gets, the noisier it gets. Noise level > Speed :p

+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 26, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted April 26, 2008 (edited) My PS3 is pretty damn quiet :p-Rich- I know, im saying if the drive WAS to get faster, it would make it noisier. If MS had hard drives in all their 360's, they could effectively install data to the hard drive like the PS3 does, and reduce the speed the 360 drive reads at. It's locked at something like 12x, which is why the 360 is as noisy as it is. Edited April 26, 2008 by Audioboxer
Danrarbc
The faster the drive gets, the noisier it gets.Noise level > Speed :p I could deal with an extra 5db to reduce the load times. It's not like making it faster has to mean it becomes the monster that is most Xbox 360 DVD drives (I say most cause the Lite-On drives are pretty good)

+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 27, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted April 27, 2008 Are there any guides or suggested products for this? Cmon, use common sense, replacing drives/hardware in your PS3 is NOT going to work

crazzyyfool
Well, replacing the hard drive with a bigger faster one works so why not with the BD drive? I know its not user-accessible like the HD but surely its not impossible.
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 28, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted April 28, 2008 You act like it's impossible. It isn't. Not physically impossible, but good luck getting it to work with the PS3. Like MS, Sony probably have firmware/a key attached to each drive so that it only works on the one system. This prevents modifications/potential piracy and people trying to fix drives themselves. I don't know that for sure, but it's very unlikely they aren't going to protect their hardware in some fashion. Maybe you can replace it, but expect it to only work with a licensed PS3 BR drive, not any BR drive you can pickup off the street.
