UK PS3 Backward Compatibility?

Recommended Posts

Sorry to those hoping to see an answer, but I'm asking the question.

Will us UKers ever see backwards compatibility back in the UK PS3 consoles? Because I really want to buy a PS3, but I REALLY want Backward compatibility so I can play my PS2 games :(

I plan on buying a PS3 in June when MGS4 is released. America are getting a bundle with a backward compatible PS3, Dualshock 3 and MGS4, which is what I'm really hoping for in the UK. Does anyone know if this is going to happen? :\

We don't know... this gets asked frequently.

Right now, only 40GB and PS1 BC.

You can

a) Buy and hope for software BC which isn't far fetched at Sony hinting at PS2 games on PSN

b) Source a 60GB

c) Hold off and see if Europe get's the 80GB

d) Buy and just play your PS2 games on your PS2

I've got a 40GB and I haven't really touched any PS2 games since I got my PS3. I have however completed all my PS2 games.

Only time im going back to my PS2 is for Yakuza 2 and I have no issues having a PS2 hooked up to my TV...

My older brother has a 60GB, he bought it on launch, however other 60GB consoles go for insane prices on ebay :p

I don't care about hard drive size, all I want is the backward compatibility, I don't even understand why they removed it? American still has it :s

To reduce costs in Europe.

People weren't liking the idea of a ?425 PS3, except for the nut jobs who buy the 60GB on ebay.

You could buy a 40GB, a larger hard drive (200GB?) and a PS2 Slim for cheaper than what some people pay for 60GB PS3's on ebay. Absolutely daft. Hook your PS2 up over component and it will look good enough.

Sony seem to think it's a niche market who will whine about lack of BC, and tbh they aren't that wrong. Most people buy a PS3 for PS3 games and features, not to upscale their PS2 games. It only works like this due to there being 130 million or something PS2s out there. If the PS2 wasn't as popular, BC would be more of a must for Sony, like it is for Nintendo or MS.

However a choice of BC on the market wouldn't be unwise - From a business POV though, a new more expensive model in the UK, even with BC, probably won't sell as much as the 40GB in the mass market.... Which is no doubt why Sony aren't really blinking an eye over BC - Unless they know software BC is coming :ninja::

That's the thing, I don't have a PS2, but I'd like to have the options to play the games on my HDTV with upscaling!

Those bastards. If Apple release a new iMac next week with an updated GPU, and Sony release a bundle with MGS4, DS3 and BC. I'll be one happy ****ing bunny :D

The issue of backwards compatibility is my only issue at the moment. I do plan on purchasing a PS3 sometime over the summer, certinaly before October (Pro Evo!).

Is there any sort of "frontward compatibility", meaning can the ps3 controller be used on ps2? I want to get a way to play on pc using a controller, but am not yet considering buying a dedicated pc controller. I have no ps3 and where I live it is WAY too expensive, about $800 for the 60GB (I think) and eventually in the future, when the $$$ is available, I'll buy the ps3 and have 2 controller, yey.
