Install errors with (K)Ubuntu 8.0.4

Recommended Posts

With all the hype over Ubuntu 8.0.4, I thought id give linux another go seens as I have a better machine now. I have the 64bit alternative CD image but when it boots and i select install, the screen has 2 error messages that stay on for about 5 seconds and then disapear. The install seems to want to continue afterwards, prompting me for a kb layout? (cant remember exactly what). Anyway, the errors are ;

1) dmi_string_out_of_memory

2) save_oem_strings_devices_out_of_memory

My specs are; AMD Phenon 9500

3GB DDR2

NVidia 8500GT

Full specs here

Is it save to continue the install or will it cause problems further down the line ?

Cheers

Continue your install. If you have problems after install, then we can troubleshoot.

Why not just use the desktop CD or wubi?

Because Wubi is not a real installation (though Canonical have done a bang-up job convincing people it is), and if the Alternate disk doesn't work, I'd be willing to make a bet that the Desktop one won't either. And oh yeah, "because [he] shouldn't have to".

What, may I ask, is not "real" about it?

It is a full installation, but merely using an additional filesystem layer. ext3 on NTFS. But the kernel and everything is running just the same, because it is a real install.

For one, it does not have the ability to hibernate or suspend. Secondly, I do not believe 64bit is supported. That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but just the fact that it is installed on a virtual disk in an NTFS partition does not seem like the greatest of ideas to me.
