Calling all ATI Ubuntu users....

I'm pretty much a n00b when it comes to Linux.. I keep on getting a black screen when installing ati drivers.. I've tried EnvyNG to install it no go.. It's getting annoying. is anyone else having a problem like me on Ubuntu 8.0.4? If not.. What do I need to do to getting working.

Just use the driver manager (System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers)

And actually what card do you have?

I have an x1550 (RV516) and I have to use the one in the ubuntu repos...

I've had nothing but trouble trying to get my ATI card working as well.

I had to abandon Ubuntu last week. I'd tried it for three days (hardy heron was in late late late beta), i'd tried all the support on the ubuntu forums..its just not stable under ATI drivers. Freezes, hangs, reboots randomly. I won't try using it again until its been properly fixed, either by ATI or Ubuntu.

I have an X1650Pro btw.

yet another reason why linux sucks. Yet, I love the irony of linux people making fun of Windows for drivers.

For the record, I tried Ubuntu 8.04 when it was in beta, and it worked fine with my integrated ATI x200M.

Linux does not suck. It has its problems like every operating system. I wasnt asking for your opinion on "Linux".

Well too late, I just gave you my opinion :p In any case, did you try the restricted driver manager and have you tried searching for "ATI" in synaptic?

I'd say linux is by far the most stable OS there is. ATI is known for having crappy drivers on linux, the same way nvidia is known for having better drivers on XP than anywhere else. However, there are alternatives to the official drivers from both companies, which may not bring all the features, but at least they're stable!

For the record, I've never had stability problems with official drivers from either nvidia OR ati on ubuntu.

If Vista's only problem was drivers than you would have a point, but Vista has far more wrong with it than that. Much much more.

Yeah it is AGP.

So is mine. I have a x1650 Pro 256Megs 8X AGP.

Please tell me where Vista has problems, because I ran it on my old laptop without any problems whatsoever... It doesnt have to be in this thread, as it would be thread hijacking, but if you create a thread, let me know. :)

I've warned for trolling comments just like this, so let's either play nice or find somewhere else to go.

What planet have you been living on for the last year or so? It certainly isn't Earth. You're in a minority.
