+Fahim S. MVC Posted April 27, 2008 MVC Share Posted April 27, 2008 Hi, Everytime a new release of Ubuntu comes out I am amazed as to how much better it is than the last. So I was very very keen to see Hardy Heron in action I was very keen to try out the Wubi install on 8.04 but for some reason it doesn't love me. I install, and give it 15GB of space on my C: drive within Vista x64 - it works for a while, 15GB of my hardrive gets used up and I am told to remove any CDs from the my optical drives. So that's what I do. It restarts and I get a Windows Boot Menu with an Ubuntu option which once selected takes me to the Ubuntu boot screen - I am impressed! While the bar is moving left to right, I notice that my DVD-RW light flashes, my DVD-ROM light flashes and then my floppy drive light flashes. It kind of repeats this over and over staying on the boot screen for a long time. Eventually the boot screen disappears and I get a message to the effect of "Buffer I/O error on device sda3, logical block xxxxxxxxxx" (where the long string of x's seems to refer to a different block each time. This message comes up on the screen several times (about 30) before presenting me with a prompt... no desktop! What's going on? I first tried to install from the disk image mounted in DaemonTools, so I thought that might be the problem. I decided to burn it a physical disk and tried uninstalling and reinstalling but the problem is the same. The only thing I can think of is that it doesn't like the Intel Matrix 'RAID' configuration I have got going. But I can't find anything to suggest that is the case. Any help would be much appreciated!
4CxbqFxVnstmA Veteran Posted April 27, 2008 Veteran Share Posted April 27, 2008 Can you boot from the Live CD (a real CD) into a live session of Ubuntu? That should let you know if Ubuntu can or can't handle your hardware out of the box. If it does work ok that way, maybe a dual boot the traditional, non Wubi way would do it. +Fahim S. MVC Posted April 27, 2008 Author MVC Share Posted April 27, 2008 Yes - I can boot from the Live CD into a live session of Ubuntu. I have had every version since 6 running that way straight out of the box. I really don't want to repartition my drives and I know 7.10 couldn't see my 'RAID' set as one disk. I really want to keep my RAID!
Elv13
It is not a hardware problem, but it can be the raid. I/O error mean that it can't read file and if it cant read them, it can not boot. This is file coruption, or a serious bug in the way wubi mount the root and swap partition. If it is file corruption, a simple reinstallation will fix them. If not, is it possible to know what exactly is sda3? It look like a hard drive and not a cd drive (an surely not a floppy). I am wondering if it is the swap or the root. +Fahim S. MVC Posted April 27, 2008 Author MVC Share Posted April 27, 2008 How do I find out what sda3 - I like to play with Linux every so often but I am still a noob? I have a feeling it may be sawp as when I get the prompt, I can ls and see all the folders (usr, lib etc.)
