thefonz
Hi, I'm thinking of dual-booting my laptop with vista and linux. Mainly because ive never used linux before and am already dual booting my main desktop pc with vista and xp. So I came across this elivecd distro of linux which seems to be good - anyone used it? I've got my iso image for it so i just boot to the cd and install as normal? Thanks! Fonz.
kyro
well , its nice distro to explore one special WM i.e Enlightment beta. (which is in development forever). apart from that, Its not really recommended to use it as your based installed , go for some popular Distro like Fedora or buntus or Suse's. thefonz
Oh its not as my main OS - i like vista for that. This is just something i can play around with and checkout what linux has to offer. I'm a windows man through and through :)
markwolfe Veteran Posted April 29, 2008 Veteran Share Posted April 29, 2008 Kyro is saying that the "LiveCD" is meant to run as a LiveCD, and less so as an "install". He is recommending using something designed to install for you as your Linux to try. Hence the *buntu/Fedora/Suse recommendation from him.
Elv13
Elive is one of the best looking and best software selection distro, but you will find hard to use when you will want more of what is there by default. Ubuntu is probably the best distribution for starting, then elive will be easy to use. But anyway, you can install Enlightment, the elive graphical shell on every distribtution if you want to. gnuman
Ubuntu 8.04 will be a good choice as you can install it as an application within Windows Vista with the Wubi installer so you do not have to dual boot or change your config. You can check out the screenshots of Hardy Heron on my site.

thefonz
Ok, so i've managed to dual-boot my laptop with vista and ubuntu. i am very impressed with ubuntu sofar except! it does not seem to detect any wireless card! i can get on the net no problem if I plug in the cable direct. but it does not even seem to see the wireless! obviously i want it to. ive never ever used llinux before so am a total n00b with it. my wireless card internal (its a toshiba satellite pro) is a Realtek RTL8101E PCI Express. any help greatly appreciated! also this enlightenment sounds interesting - is it easy to install and use on ubuntu? this is fun! fonz. kyro
well i kinda knew u will jump buntu. Anyway. Try to find Services in admininstrator menu and check whether "NetworkManager" and "NetworkManagerDispatch" are clicked and running. then try regarding your WIFI again. also in command line, try to type 'nm-applet &' (without quotes), its NetworkManager applet (if its not running). markwolfe Veteran Posted April 29, 2008 Veteran Share Posted April 29, 2008 Not sure about your wireless. But to install enlightenment, open up your package manager, do a search for "enlightenment" and click it to select it for install, and click "apply". (or just type in sudo apt-get install enlightenment in a terminal session)
Elv13
About the wireless card, google is your friend, if there is a native linux driver, use it (by the way, linux driver are rarely available on manufacturer website). If you dont find one, or give up to install it, you can use ndiswrapper, a windows wireless driver emulator, it will work fine, but it is tricky to install too. thefonz
Ok so maybe i'm a complete idiot. I cant see the network managerdispatch or network manager in the services tab. So i tried ndiswrapper, downloaded it but i cant find any decent instructions for my card (its an RTC8101E). Sorry to be a doofus but can someone talk me through it step by step from the beginning to get this working? All i want is wireless internet! Fonz. kyro
Well i tried googling and found maybe your model runs well with Fedora 8 and check the following review http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~pb22/TSP200/#S0520 regarding tips for Wifi , I dont know its your same laptop model or not, do tell full laptop name if this issue is not resolved. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4841185#post4841185 (buntu related)
thefonz
Hmm ok. So Fedora 8 could be an idea. Its easy enough to delete ubuntu and install this. I really just want a distro that i can play around with and learn linux since like i said - its the only OS i havent got my teeth into yet. It is by no means intended to replace my main OS of Vista though! Any other recoomendations for things/sites?
kyro
first of all, whats the model name of your laptop? search at http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/toshiba.html
thefonz
Its a Toshiba Satellite Pro A210 model. Think its this one since i bought it a while ago this year. http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Toshiba_Sat...5.4/version.asp I like the look of this Fedora 8...although i see that Fedora 9 is out soon!. Really appreciating this help mate. Fonz.
kyro
even ubnutu latest distro is good. But fedora 9 is going have some reallly exciting features ( I am using fedora on this desktop Intel dual core and HP 6114tx laptop too, I recommend you to download Preview version which is latest and reallly close to final one. http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/ I searched and some people had trouble getting ubuntu live to even boot up, you are in good luck that its working at your end and you are stuck at Wifi. And BTW below is screenshot of the network thing i was telling . http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/kyr...services-f8.jpg and @ fedora forums someone managed to get Wifi working but you will really have to do heavy-duty stuff but this is your chance of learning hardcore thing too . Check the post
thefonz
Ok, so if I uninstall ubunto tonight and stick on fedora 8 - you reckon this will get my wireless working? why is it such a problem with wireless anyway? also, if i put on fedora 8; am i going to have to download an uninstall/reinstall from scratch when fedora 9 is released? or is there an update that just updates the whole OS manually - ie: is it an xp/vista sort of upgrade or like a Service Pack. i am liking what i see in linux sofar though :) i'm sure we'll get it sorted... kyro
This is how things go when DIstro does not support your hardware out of box but someone has already released support for that hardware via third party. there are times when you get RPM (executable) but as of now you got Source files. I am not sure but i think you can even get that source files and compile it at your ubuntu system etc, obviously others will tip you how to go about that but things should be different. If you have no bandwidth , you can try downloading Fedora9 and see if it supports your wifi out-of-box. Uninstalling will be simply Booting of NEW distro live CD and Formart the partition (where ubuntu is installed) and reformat it clean to install Fedora etc.
