gregb0b
should probably post this in the [OFFICAL] thread. I know most of the GTA fans are just refreshing that thread for info and comments.

RageOfFury
The PS3 version is actually 630p native. http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=134736
Alfista
630? well thats not nice :( honestly.. i wish PS3 was a better machine.. better graphics card and more ram perhaps... With the current settings i dont believe GTA4 could have been any better due to framerate issues anyway.. i might be wrong.

If you compare both versions, the PS3 version is more smoother looking and has way less jaggies then the 360 version which runs @ 720p. To be quite honest, the 360 version is jaggies galore. I went for the PS3 version only because the 360 isn't a reliable machine. Yup I'll miss out on those DLC extras, but at least I don't have to worry about the RROD. The PS3 version is actually 630p native.http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=134736 I just thought I would chime in real quick on this topic. I own a Sony 60" SXRD (model KDS-60A3000) HDTV, and when playing Grand Theft Auto IV, it informs me that my PS3 is sending it a 16:9, 720p signal. Now, as RageOfFury said in his post, it has since been discovered that the game is actually 630p native, but obviously the "RSX" graphics chip is sending the signal as a 720p one. I have no idea why the box says that the game supports video output types of 1080i and 1080p; I see no option in the game to allow me to change this. And the PlayStation 3 has no hardware upscaler chip inside it (like the Xbox 360 does), so as far as I am aware, it is impossible to upscale PS3 games to anything higher than their native resolution. crazzyyfool
The PS3 upscales via software if need be.
Coldgunner
So go ahead, tell us how.. you need to deselect all other resolutions under the display settings in the PS3 menus
stockwiz
I bought the game, my first PS3 game, and just can't get used to the low resolutions after gaming in 1920x1200 for so long.. I'll probably sell it on the bay early next week. I'm one of them who would rather have lower texture quality at higher resolutions then higher texture quality at lower resolutions. The aliasing and choppiness get to me.

(Y) So if you're playing on a PC monitor, sit back a bit. If you're playing on a large TV, sit back a bit. If you're playing on a projector, sell it and get a TV. :p
NextGen_Gamer
you need to deselect all other resolutions under the display settings in the PS3 menus I will try this latter on tonight with Grand Theft Auto IV and see if it works, but I have another quick question. What happens when I play a game that doesn't have software upscaling support? Like, for example, MotorStorm or Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (both of which are native 720p games with no mention of 1080i or 1080p compatability)? Will they just not work until I re-adjust the display options again?

I noticed no difference between 720p/1080p, therefore im just leaving it at the resolution the game automatically picks.

I tried it out the other day, and I also couldn't tell any difference in quality. Like you said, my HDTV (like all modern day ones) has to automatically upscale everything to 1080p anyways (that is just the nature of plasma, LCD, or LCoS technology) and there just is no difference between 720p Grand Theft Auto IV being upscaled through the HDTV or software upscaled through the PS3.
