WastedJoker
Right. GTA4 + playing for 20 mins = fan coming on rather loudly. Doesn't happen for any other game. Anyone else getting this?
thefarewellnote
I have the same issue. Fans are on constantly no matter what. So freaking annoying

Cormier6083
I have mine tucked in a cabinet, so it gets rather loud after a while, but it's still trucking along!
williamhook
No issues here - October 2006 (is that launch? :p ) 60GB UK console.
xendrome
Next they will want the fans off, and then come complain when their console overheats... It has to be the placement of your console, the fans come on when it reaches a specific temperature. Believe it or not, the fan coming on is by design, and is a good thing... Ricardo Gil
Mine always turns on after a few minutes playing, no matter the game. It's a 60GB model btw.

Believe it or not, the fan coming on is by design, and is a good thing... It is a "safety" feature related to heat. That's how people got their PS3 to "clean" itself - What they were doing was overheating it and causing the fans to fire on at full speed. I can only assume your room temperature followed by air circulation around your PS3 will cause it to speed up the fans, unless you have a genuinely faulty unit. For more people I fear the earlier, rather than the later. I'm in the UK so it's hardly "warm" here often, and I have good ventilation around my PS3 - Probably why I've never heard my fans speed up once. Well to be truthful, folding@home can sometimes louden the fans slightly higher than in a game, but it really is slightly, nothing like what some people report. I guess the 40GB unit is also quieter than the 60GB.
WastedJoker
The fans have never behaved this way and only do so when playing GTA4. This is strange.
KC
I noticed the same thing. Only with GTA4. I have a 80gig.
jonmoseley8
I played it for about 6 - 8ish hours yerterday and I didn't notice the fans coming on at all. The only game that makes the fans come on at full speed is The Orange Box. :) Ive got a UK PS3 60GB.

Nighthawk-F117
Maybe just clean the system out, take the disk out, turn it off, and when you turn it on (at the back) hold down the eject button for 10 secs.
NextGen_Gamer
I agree with Audioboxer on this issue. I think that all of these problems are related to each person's specific room environment and ambient temperature. I have an 80GB model (bought in November 2007) and have yet to hear the fans spin-up while in a game. They do become slightly noisier though when Folding@home is running; but not anything that I would call loud. I have my PS3 sitting on a shelf in its horizontal orientation all by itself. There is about four inches of space on either side and roughly eight inches of space above it. The front and back of the shelf are both open. I generally try to keep my room's temperature as close to 50? F as possible (yeah, I like it that cold; I feel hot all the time :pp ).
Mosqutus
If you have it tucked into a cabinet, then the heat has no where to go, so the fan kicks out to try and blow the heated air away, happened to me while playing COD4 for a few hours, pulled it out of the shelf to get some more air and the fan never came back on. Rookas
People in the 360 threads are complaining about their 360's overheating while playing GTA also. It's possible, I suppose, that GTA makes consoles run hot. With everything that's going on in the game, I'm sure it's using more CPU than Warhawk or Call of Duty. WastedJoker
The fan came on even during the install period and was on a lot during the first couple of hours play - very loudly, too. However, I suffered from the bug where cut-scenes freeze so I re-installed the game. Never had a problem with the fan since then. My PS3 is vertical, and has several inches of clear space aroound it so I'm not sure it was a ventilation issue. I'm wondering if the first corrupt install was making CPU cycle even higher than normal. I'll give that clean thing I try too - what does it actually do when you power up holding down the eject button?
Rookas
I'll give that clean thing I try too - what does it actually do when you power up holding down the eject button? It puts the fan on full blast, presumably to blow out all the dust. You probably don't need to do that, sounds like the install was corrupted and you already fixed it. Rockstar's suggestion on the freezing problem was to reinstall, so it sounds like you're good to go.

Neil
My fan normally comes on after a few minutes it stands vertical with a wall one side, the side with the PS3 logo, and LCD TV the other, but maybe I should move it. 60GB Model.

Mine is the same mate. The fan comes on normally. The 40GB units are a lot quieter though on the whole. The fans are working, that's all that matters. WastedJoker
Right. This is bugging the hell out of me. My PS3 had great ventilation out the side vent, about 8/9 inches of clear space in the rear vent and I've even blown cool air into the front vents but whenever I play GTA4 for more than 45 minutes, the fan comes on for 20 minutes (loudly) stops for another 15 minutes then comes on again. Rinse, repeat. People on this thread state their fan comes on but isn't loud - mine is the same loudness when I force them to come on using the standby-hold Eject method. Basically, my fan have two modes of operation - silent or full blast and loud. This still only happens with GTA though. Is that the same for everyone else? Current room temperature in my bedroom is a brisk 19 celsius. That's hardly warm/stuffy.
