+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted May 1, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted May 1, 2008 Right. This is bugging the hell out of me. My PS3 had great ventilation out the side vent, about 8/9 inches of clear space in the rear vent and I've even blown cool air into the front vents but whenever I play GTA4 for more than 45 minutes, the fan comes on for 20 minutes (loudly) stops for another 15 minutes then comes on again. Rinse, repeat. People on this thread state their fan comes on but isn't loud - mine is the same loudness when I force them to come on using the standby-hold Eject method. Basically, my fan have two modes of operation - silent or full blast and loud. This still only happens with GTA though. Is that the same for everyone else? Current room temperature in my bedroom is a brisk 19 celsius. That's hardly warm/stuffy. I know there ain't much room, but trying lying it flat and playing for 45 mins! WastedJoker
I know there ain't much room, but trying lying it flat and playing for 45 mins! I've tried it that way too - same result. I figured there was enough room for ventilation - I know the drawers it's on are cramped for space :p but the actual ventilation distances are ok

My 60GB is in my TV stand thing, and doesn't have much room on the sides (about 4cm on each side and the top), but the front and back are open. Still, it gets pretty hot if I put my hand at the back of it, so it's maybe a problem with yours I think.
WastedJoker
I ended up buying one of those Swordfish cooling fans. Hopefully it'll help.
popisdead uk
This is a very subjective subject. One man's idea of loud could, and is another's idea of quiet. Without hearing it, you could very well be hearing the same as everybody that is saying theirs run quiet.

The PS3 is very quiet, if someone is complaining about noise levels from it, you can sure as hell bet the fans are running louder than "normal". Unless you have VERY strict beliefs in what "quiet" means

You don't know what people class as quiet, and loud Mine can be heard when the sound dies down a little, it not as loud as my 360 but I would say its not all that far off when playing GTA and PS2 games. I have a 1st gen 60GB PS3.

I have a 1st gen 60GB PS3. Trust me it was definitely loud. Loud enough that I had to turn my TV volume up very high.If the fan went off, the TV was too loud and I had to turn it down. However, the cooling fan I bought has sorted it out nicely - no more loud fan coming on. The only downside is this cooling fan is a bit awkward to clip on grrr. majortom1981
WastedJoker Have you tried keeping your ps3's horizontally? I am renting gta4 from hollywood video and the fans are very silent on my 40gig ps3 while playing the game. I did figure out that i cant play the game while logged onto the playstation network though.

I am renting gta4 from hollywood video and the fans are very silent on my 40gig ps3 while playing the game. I did figure out that i cant play the game while logged onto the playstation network though. I tried horizontally/vertically without any difference. I'm not sure what the cause was - I had good-sized gaps for the vents, my room temperature is naturally quite cool (I prefer colder rooms) and in other games the only time the fans came on that loud was after hours and hours of play. GTA4 is the only game that can make the fans come on after 20 minutes. That is, until I bought this -> Click The fact it solved the issue implies it was just a case of my PS3 overheating due to the nature of the game (higher and more constant CPU usage etc) or perhaps something with my PS3 means it is slightly less tolerant of higher temps and makes the fans come on sooner than other peoples'. +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted May 3, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted May 3, 2008 One last thing you could try is playing the game in another enviroment. Might be a pain, but hook your PS3 up to another TV in another room. Maybe in it's current setup your TV's hot air blows in it's direction coupled with any other active hardware and the rooms room temperature. Therefore it may look like your giving it good ventilation and the room isn't that hot, but whatever is happening the part of the PS3 with the sensors is getting blasted with heat :p

WastedJoker
Pleasebe carefull with those fan addons they have a tendancy blow peoples systems. Do you have links to these kinds of stories? How loud is the external fan? How does it work? Looks like it will block all your USB ports? It plugs into the right-most port (leaving access to the other) and all it is is a row of 4 40mm fans which blows air into the front vent of your PS3. It has an on/off switch. The noise it creates is louder than my PS3 when it's fans aren't running (i.e, when watching a movie) but MUCH less noisy than the problem of my fans coming on very loudly. I've heard people talking about PS3 fans coming on with different volumes but mine was all or nothing.
