Jeston Veteran Posted May 1, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 1, 2008 Doesn't VistaGlazz have an option to restore the back up files?

Elliot B.
Doesn't VistaGlazz have an option to restore the back up files? VistaGlazz is showing "An error has occured. Essential system file is not found or unreadable: AeroStyles MS Styles. Please repair your system before attempting to use this tool again." Ah ha! Ok, so see if you can restore, check the themese service, if not system restore? Themes service is running and I disable System Restore. I constantly add files to my PC and if I restored the system from even a day ago, I lose a lot of photos/work.
Jeston Veteran Posted May 1, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 1, 2008 Patched Vista x64 SP1 files courtesy of Rafael. Take ownership of the three files in system32 and replace the files with these and reboot. You should be all good to go with patched files. You should be all good to go with patched files. I used the advice from here and I took control successfully. However, when I try to overwrite the files, I get the message stating they can not be overwritten due to the file(s) being in use. Any ideas? giantpotato
Try booting in safe mode. Also, there's no good reason to disable system restore. It doesn't change any of your personal files/photo's/work.
Elliot B.
Try booting in safe mode. Also, there's no good reason to disable system restore. It doesn't change any of your personal files/photo's/work. ... and I rarely do anything like this and even this is not serious in the slightest. I've been able to fix everything that System Restore would 'restore'. I see it as a way to learn. Plus, I value my disk space. EDIT: Safe Mode didn't help :/ Edited May 1, 2008 by King Mustard

fhpuqrgrpgvirzhpujbj
I had the same problem, but it started working after I took control using this: http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=13157
Jeston Veteran Posted May 1, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 1, 2008 If it says the files are still in use, stop the themes service by going to Start->Run and typing services.msc. Right click on Themes and click Stop. You should be able to copy the files now.

Denis W. Veteran Posted May 2, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 2, 2008 If everything fails there's a brute force solution: boot into a 'live' OS and replace the files there. Suggestions are: 1) Recovery environment from the Vista DVD: open a command prompt window and copy the files over (but do this after you've set permissions for 'Everyone' to overwrite the files) 2) Use a Linux live CD (i.e. Ubuntu) to copy over the files. The NTFS-3g driver in Linux doesn't give a damn about NTFS permissions; it'll overwrite it regardless. 3) Use the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows (only if you have a spare XP disk lying around) 4) Or if you already dual boot with XP, just boot into XP and replace it there... My suggestion is to go with numbers 1 and 2 first before trying 3 and 4.
Elliot B.
I forced the overwrite using a Ubuntu Live CD but there is still no Aero appearing. It's beginning to confuse/annoy me. EDIT: I deleted all references to 'Aero' in the \Resources\Themes folder. Now can I use the Windows Vista DVD to repair (i.e. restore) the theme files? Denis W. Veteran Posted May 2, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 2, 2008 I'm not sure if that's possible. For Vista all the files are stored in one large disk image instead of XP where the files are stored in a i386 folder. Try downloading a custom VS and applying that. Otherwise if you want the original Aero folder feel free to PM me.

Dirhael
Seeing as you are able to made 3rd party visual styles work, the problem is that your original VS is corrupted. To fix this, insert your Vista DVD, open a command prompt as admin, and run the following command: sfc /SCANFILE=C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Aero\aero.msstyles This will restore the file from the DVD if your copy is corrupted.
