Display cropping

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Quite simply, my PS3 won't display the full screen!

It is most noticeable in AVIs with subtitles (they are readable, but too close to the bottom of the screen. Changing the display to normal sized shows the entire AVI in it's uncropped beauty!) and the web browser (the title and info bars are unreadable, with only about half of the text viewable).

I'm running my PS3 via HDMI in 1080i, have tried 720i/p, and have tried using scart with SD (in both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios), which all cut off all edges - even while in 4:3 mode, cutting off the left/right edges.

I've read around a few places that say there's a setting on most HD TVs that will force the TV to show the cropped edges. I've spent some time with my TV's settings and manual, and there is no mention of changing *any* HD settings. And regardless, running my PS3 via scart has the same problem!

So is there a way to force the PS3 to display using slightly off 1080i, maybe with black edges, so that only the unused edges are cropped? Or some other setting I've missed?

Cheers!

its unfortunately not a requirement for a hdready set to support 1:1 pixel mapping (no overscan), although some sets do. a HD Ready 1080p set has to support 1:1 pixel mapping as standard, so the issue is your tv.

Before anyone outside Europe posts here saying HD ready doesn't mean this or that blah blah...HD ready means a lot in Europe - it defines a minimum set of requirements. The rest of the world doesn't follow this specification however.

Gah! My HD TV isn't HD enough?!

Oh well, at least it'll stop me from wasting any more time on the matter... I just wish I woulda known before buying my current HDTV... I mean honestly, how many people would have considered that their TV couldn't show the entire picture?!

Cheers anyway! :)
