[Concept]DualShock IV

This is a product concept I came up with, the swapping of the joystick and pad is not an original idea, but I don't know why Sony has not adapted this because everyone uses the analogue stick as a primary control.

There are actually a lot of changes here than it meets the eye. 1) The swapped left analogue and pad obviously. 2) The selling point would be the haptic (force feedback) joysticks, think of it exerting a force upon the player so there is "resistance". I don't know if the hardware is able to be implemented in handheld but it is revolutionary that I can say. 3) The grip is actually at a wider angle as the original. In a ergonomics sense it would perhaps be more comfortable. 4) The size of the pad is actually "almost" the same as the original, hence there is no issue of recalibrating for users. 5) Trigger buttons at a better inward angle so there is less likely for fingers to "slip off". 6) Clear buttons from the PSP that resist print being scratched off. 7) The larger "PlayStation" button.

Do you see a potential in this? Suggestions and comments welcome. Should I make this big by posting on other forums and contact blogs? Whatever it is, do leave your mark on the flickr page.

to be brutally honest I don't think having the d-pad and analogue switched would be very comfortable, I find the dual shock 3 is best held 'loosely' and I think having it this way may cause cramps.

Beautiful, most games use the stick more than the d-pad, the stick should be in the natural primary position where the thumb falls (where it is in your concept), nice work.

I understand the placement of the d-pad on the PS1 era were most games used the d-pad, but it doesn't make sense anymore.

changing the analog stick would be very odd, sony has had that style for a very long time and it would be too radical of a change.

I've always wanted extra levers where your fingers are below the L2 - R2 or rather lower. For say like F1 games, you could gear shift like the F1 steering wheel, but still use L2 brake, R2 Accelerator.

When you watch the drivers fingers.

I know Sony are sticking to their roots with the old style PS controllers, but I wish they'd just give up and just have a redesign. The 360 controller is so much more comfortable to hold. Its shaped to your hands properly. The PS controller just kind of sits in your hands when you're playing it, which you can actually wrap your hands around the 360 controller.

Absolutely beautiful. I love it. I would buy that as soon as I could if it ever actually came out.

I like it! It's more comfortable to have the stick there, and I can't remember the last time a game used those arrows or whatever they are, for anything besides menu selection.

You all must have really small hands if you find using the analog in its current position to be uncomfortable. I hold the controller like I have any other controller, XBOX included, and find it very easy to use and not cramping. The only controller I have ever had cramp my hands has been the new "better" GH3 controller [which is god awful].

It's not that the position of the left analogue is uncomfortable, it's unnatural. Placing the analogue where your thumb's natural position is will 1) reduce strain/fatigue 2) feel more natural (as well as the increased angle of the grip).

No one's commented on the haptic idea... I still think it's the next big thing in console controllers...

This is a fantastic idea sundayx! The only thing is what is your idea considering R2 and L2? I don't think bumpers like the 360 would be a good idea but go back to the PS2 style ones, the ps3 controller r2 and l2 had no back on them and they were way to loose, maybe just putting a back on them so you press them down instead of curl them back. Small fix but that's how I'd want them :D

I'm surprised that the PS controller hasn't evolved to be a bit more ergonomic over the years. I like the idea of widening the grips and tilting the triggers in a bit.

It looks good, but I still like the original. The only thing I think needs a major change is the triggers on the DS3.

I actually still like the Boomerang design of the PS3 controller because to me, it looks quite comfortable to hold. The old PS2 controller and the current PS3 controller always makes my hands cramp a little after a time as both of my thumbs are located at the bottom of the controller. I like the fact that you used the Xbox 360 layout as for me, it is the best layout hands down as it's very comfortable to use and it makes moving and targeting, especially in games such as Gears of War and Resident Evil 4, really easy to handled.

Also, I wish that Sony had use the old R2/L2 layout as the current one where it goes down doesn't work well for me. Other than that, a nice design (Y) .

I have larger hands than most people and I find it extremely uncomfortable, as well as very difficult to get a "straight" direction. Because of my thumb having to push up from a weird angle, it just feels strange and I always tend to slant to the right after a while. With the Xbox 360 controller, I just push forward with my thumb and I go forward, no strange angle or anything.
