Antaris Veteran Posted May 7, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 7, 2008 Looks like an old PS3 controller concept, poorly done. Was that necessary?

+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted May 7, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted May 7, 2008 They shouldn't have abandon that boomerang design. :( You can thank the internet for going postal at them for that. The boomerang controller would have no doubt felt great. Looks quite good (the mockup) - The 360 controller holds well, but it's d-pad is absolutely awful. The only time I do like the d-pad where it is just now is with football games, I hate using analog for football games.
Huleboeren
Dont care about where the analogs are - only thing I want changed are the L2/R2.. They need to be inverted like the X360 controller. People who complain about the analogs position are just weird - if you can use the right stick without problems why not the left? :s Your hands are mirrored. Because the right stick isn't used nearly as much and is therefore not as important. If I use it for a quick flick here and there to move the camera and such, that's fine. But it doesn't need to be as accurate and as comfortable as the left stick since the left stick is the primary movement stick.
BGM
urgh please no, i really dislike analogue controls i think id be quite upset if sony ever swapped the d-pad with the left stick also, whats wrong with the triggers? there really isnt an issue with them... do they fall out of peoples hands or something?? just 'hold on' with your thumb on the top of the controller... its not hard! JackBauer87
Sony created the best controller ever when the original dual shock came out with the PSOne. It should not be touched! Momma said, "If it aint broke dont fix it". Of course technological improvements are necessary as time moves on, but the overall layout and feel of the controller must remain if sony wants to continue being successful. They should make it in seperate modules which you click on whereever you like :D Want it like the x360? simply move it so.. want it a completely different way? feel free to do so. That would be awesome Controller 2.
Alfista
okk gcool controller but WHY DONT sony releases 2 DualShoch 4 types Type A can be one with where DPAD will be up ant Type B can be one with DPAD down i cant see why they cant do this and release it and customers would buy it to their own liking. because some of my friends complain that they can not play COD4 with dpad. Xero
I personally like the controller the way it is, it doesn't look bad or anything, quite nice and clean actually. My brother (big 360 fan) would die for this. But I like mine symmetrical :)
morficus
uhm.. I hate the idea of swapping the d-pad with the analog stick. I actually like having both my thumbs at the same level. the only changes I would ever make to the PS controller would be... 1- I would change the type of analog stick it has. make it like the 360 sticks which have a little dent-like in them 2- make the trigger buttons more trigger-like shapped those 2 things aside.. I <3 the DualShock
jonmoseley8
Nice mockup but as previously said "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". I personally like the current controller, as my fingers have never slipped off of the triggers (even after a 9 hour session on GTA), I have never got cramp from it and I find analogue sticks that are configured unconfortable anyway (I found the GameCube controller uncomfortable). I also like the look of it as it is as I like symmetry. :)
PL_ Veteran Posted May 7, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 7, 2008 No one's commented on the haptic idea... I still think it's the next big thing in console controllers... Is haptic really the right word? I find haptics to be extremely overrated for what they are. Force feedback, on the other hand...

sundayx Veteran Posted May 7, 2008 Author Veteran Share Posted May 7, 2008 Is haptic really the right word? I find haptics to be extremely overrated for what they are. Force feedback, on the other hand... I've been in this discussion before, people actually refer "rumble" to force feedback, it was awkward. I wikied force feedback and the word returned was haptic. I thought it fits the description well so I used it. Of course though force feedback is still the term used throughout the industry. About the design though, for those who suggested the 360 controller, it's huge isn't it, bulky for a wireless controller. It feels like the controller is owning you instead of you in control of the controller. The size and weight of the DualShock 3 (or even the SIXAXIS) feels much more comfortable? Dc'1
I would find that rather annoying lol, kinda' the same layout as the Xbox controller, and I just don't like the Xbox controllers, well, I do like the trigger buttons lol.
Nicholas-c Veteran Posted May 8, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 8, 2008 Fail. I love PS contollers as they are, why change what isn't broken ?
sundayx Veteran Posted May 8, 2008 Author Veteran Share Posted May 8, 2008 "Why change what isn't broken" This is the sort of statement that is full of fail. Should we all be playing on the original PlayStation/DualShock controller? Analogue > rumble > pressure sensitivity > accelerometers > force feedback, there is a higher degree of feel to interacting with gaming. I believe it's the way of the future. Besides, is the DualShock 3 really that perfect to some of you? I am to be skeptical. The natural position of the thumb had always been at the upper portions of the controller. That's why it's there on the NES, N64, GC, 360, it's where people of the industry has always determined that position. Because having to be customed to the awkward position of the DualShock doesn't mean it's the way it should be. Besides that position enables more flexibility in implementing hardware into the controller (more room beneath the analogue), restating the secondary purpose of the pad. EnzoFX
Are you guys serious? STFU with this "It ain't broke" nonsense. What everyone else is saying is that it's OUTDATED. A Simple concept to understand really. If you take the time to realize it, you'd see that its true. Sure the PS controller has been great, even revolutionary when it came out. But now MS has surpassed it in terms of functionality and ergonomics. You could argue by how far/much it's surpassed it, but that's beyond the point. Sure I hate the D-Pad on the MS controller, but everything else makes up for it. Sony simply needs to evolve their controller a bit in the same way MS did with respect to it's own original design as well as Sony's. Oh, and the Triggers are horrendous! What is wrong with you people. No one is saying that the controller is falling out of our hands, we're not stupid. We're just saying they're not ergonomic. NienorGT
Sony NEED to change the PS controller one time for all. But they fail to do so lol, that PS3 boomerang concept was a pure joke lol. They may have put motion detector, LR triggers and so in the PS3, it STILL the same look and feel of a '95 PS controller. I don't think they need to change the whole design tough. Change the analog place as you did then make the controller more ergonomic and voil?.

Change the analog place as you did then make the controller more ergonomic and voil?. Ergonomically the boomerang controller would have felt great in your hands (due to the way it curves), but half the web blew it to shreds with stupid jokes and remarks like it will be horrible to hold without even holding it. Looks don't really matter when all the controller is for is playing games. As for the Sixaxis/DS, it will appeal to PS owners, we've used it since PS1 - That is what many people will mean by don't "break" what doesn't need fixing. The only issue I have is with the silly downwards facing triggers. Going from 360 to PS3 often, IMO you'll prefer whatever you game on most, and find whatever you game on less weird to hold and use until you've had it in your hands for a while.
