Nate Archibald
Hey all, I just bought a PS3 today in hopes that it would be able to play movies, music, pictures off my external HD. Well I plugin my External HD through the USB port, but it doesn't even show up on the Playstation. Is there something wrong with it? It works perfectly fine on my 360... Do I need to format my HD? Oh, and I'm using a Mac... Please help.

Nate Archibald
I ended up formatting it in Disk Utility to FAT32. I am transferring my backup back to the External HD, I tested a few music albums on the PS3, and it worked. So I'm hoping it'll be able to read the movies, and my pictures. Huleboeren
Your external harddrive was probably HFS+ Remember, FAT32 is not capable of handling files that are OVER 4gigs
popisdead uk
I thought the 360 could only read FAT32 HDD's?

Coldgunner
Mmm, so why didn't it read the external HDD I plugged in thats full of music? The drive has to be FAT32 like above, also did you do the 'display all' or just try to open the drive straight up? to get the files to appear straight up then they need to be in folder named 'MUSIC', 'VIDEO' and 'PHOTO'

+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted May 7, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted May 7, 2008 Mmm, so why didn't it read the external HDD I plugged in thats full of music? The PS3 or the 360? The PS3 ONLY reads FAT32, that is a fact. To get the PS3 to display your files you must push triangle on the drives name on the XMB, and then "display all". The PS3 only automatically picks up video/music files if they're in the correct folder setup for the PS3 (Video files on the drive under a folder called VIDEO, audio in a folder called MUSIC, ect)
