Barney T. Administrators Posted May 11, 2008 Administrators Share Posted May 11, 2008 bmaher has offered up the suggestion to add Avant Window Navigator to Gnome and KDE, as it is not an app that is used by default with other distros: http://wiki.awn-project.org/index.php?title=Main_Page Is it possible to try this out? markwolfe Veteran Posted May 12, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 12, 2008 Looks cool, and would be a differentiation. (Y) Seems that this might still be too 'unstable' to use in a released Shift, though. While I don't really have a problem with it being a 0.2.6 version, it indicates this may be a bit young and have some issues. In particular, I think that thier FAQ bothered me with their red background warning regarding having AWN start up with the session: Warning: The following advice may or may not work, depending on how your desktop environment deals with compositing. Make sure that if you use a compositing manager that is separate from your window manager, that the compositing manager is started first. A workaround is to prepend "sleep 10 && " to the command, in the cases of Gnome and Xfce. In the case of KDE, you need to create a shell script in the $HOME/.kde/Autostart folder that looks like this: #!/bin/bash sleep 10 && avant-window-navigator If AWN is reliable enough to have a single configuration that works across all user setup (compositing managers seems to be a big sticking point), then I think Shift should go for it!If it ends up that AWN breaks on some user config options, and requires "tweaking", then I think Shift would be better off not enabling this by default. How much experience with AWN do Shift team members have? Or other *nix users? Can they shed some light into how portable/universal it works with different WMs/composting/video settings? Brian M. Veteran Posted May 12, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 12, 2008 Right, well I tried it on KDE last night, and it ran first time - messed around with the config for a while and I couldn't break it, so it actually looks pretty stable. That said, I'll try and integrate it into an ISO and attempt to get it to run on first boot - think that may be a different story though.
Barney T. Administrators Posted May 12, 2008 Author Administrators Share Posted May 12, 2008 ^ I agree with Mark.... if it requires tweaking to use, the average joe won't want to use it. Let's see what happens when bmaher tries it on KDE!
