I personally am looking at a blu-ray player later this year. Thinking a low-end PS3 will do the job.

The PS3 is an amazing Blu-ray player, considering the price and the fact that firmware updates are made available via downloads. It's the only (AFAIK) 2.0 profile player available on the market.

If you have an Xbox 360 you can pick up the HD-DVD Drive for ?29.99 from Gamestation

And as above, PS3 is a good choice for a Blu Ray player

Yup, thinking of doing this:

Buy a low-end PS3 as a blu-ray player

Put linux on it and also use as media player

Sound sensible?

If you want HDDVD and have an Xbox you can get it from Gamestation for ?29.99 with 3 HD DVDs.

If you want bluray, your best bet is the PS3, by far.

I wouldnt buy a PS3 to put linux on its still very limited, linux doesnt have full access to the hardware so there is no gpu acceleration to help decode the videos and it only has 256mb of ram available and as you can imagine any machine with only 256mb of ram is quite sluggish.

No need for Linux to make the PS3 a media player.

It's OS and the XMB handle many many codecs and file formats.

AVI/MP4 and MKV* can all be played (most popular I can think of).

*MKV requires to be run through a program, but quality isn't lost - See my sig.

And you can stream everything to the PS3 as well.

Yeah, the Playstation 3 is the only Blu-ray player I would really recommend. The fact that it can be updated to the new profiles because the cell processor can take the place of the dedicated hardware required in other players for the new feature is a huge advantage and a great way to future proof yourself.

Playstation 3 is the best because the firmware can be upgraded. Futureproof.
