Barney T. Administrators Posted May 17, 2008 Administrators Share Posted May 17, 2008 Hi Everyone, It's been a couple of weeks since our last meeting and I was wondering where everyone is in their development of Shift. If you guys could post where you are, we can see what we need to do. Also, we have a SVN and a FTP area for you to upload your current versions of Shift for testing. Dave Legg has all of the details! Thanks, Barney

markwolfe Veteran Posted May 18, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 18, 2008 Cosmin, one thing I liked with the original logo is how the space between created an "S", for "Shift". Can you reverse your arrows to re-create the "S"? The way you have them now has the "S" backwards. As for Flux, I have made some changes from my list of items in this thread. Namely: I have made it so Shift Flux uses the shift wallpaper, instead of a simple solid background. I added "feh" to the packages for image handling. The default ("display"?) did not handle scaling images correctly, and "feh" is one of the packages recommended to set backgrounds by "fbsetbg -i". I have done no theme work of any value. Do we have a common theme between versions? I have an idea for fluxbox menus that makes it a no-effort copy of what the XFCE menus are. I don't know who (of anyone) is working on XFCE, but if apps are added in via synaptic or apt, they get added to XFCE's menu, and hence automatically into fluxbox (so my theory goes). Finally, I have not done anything on setting up a pop up "intro to fluxbox on Shift" window for new users. Not much of an update from me, I am afraid. Also, doing some learning on Python, as I figure it will be useful to the project (plus I just had the itch to get back into programming after 10 years or so of not programming). Commodore Max
IMO, we don't need a new logo. Only updated material that goes with everything else.
Brian M. Veteran Posted May 18, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 18, 2008 (edited) At the moment, I'm experimenting with the best way of getting the KDE version together - I was originally thinking of basing it on Kubunu, but after using their release, it is buggy as hell, so I'm now thinking about installing KDE seperately and then removing gnome from Ubuntu - either way, I have a day off today so I've got an entire day to work on it. If I could find what's making Kubuntu so damn buggy it would make life alot easier :p. Do we have a list of apps we want to include, so that we're uniform among all distributions? Barney T. Administrators Posted May 18, 2008 Author Administrators Share Posted May 18, 2008 The theme and apps were the last items that we discussed before we re-organized. Here is what we had: Installer I took a look at the competition...mostly GUI, other than Ubuntu's Alternative Install CD. Here's my idea. We drop the Alternative CD and as a boot option on the Live CD/DVD (our only CD/DVD), we add the option to just Install. This would either load up a dedicated install application, or it would load up an X server and then load in Ubiquity, the installer application. Also, we would surely modify Ubiquity to make the process even easier, and more personalized to Shift. The Public We'll need lots of advertising. We should aim for a perfect distro. Plus, let's not only stick to one news site this time around. We should prepare an official press release for all. Applications Avant Window Navigator, installed, used as defaut? Compiz basics installed by default, easy to install Compiz Full version. Affinity search in Gnome Menu Ubiquity customized. Various applications revisited, the experience should be updated (lots of apps look bad). Focus on a clean interface - New Theme Clean/Working Boot screen Font manager removed? Preload? (sudo apt-get install preload) ... Seems to be something for hard drives, aka, after install. For the N00bs Easy Boot options: Start Shift; Install; Boot from Hard Drive; RAM Test... Noobs should not use Terminal, ever, ever. If anything, make the simplest apps and scripts, just keep them away from the Terminal because once a noob gets in there he'll choke and die. :p Include our own documentation Include Shift Tips - Videos showing how to use Shift (instead of Windows) Ideas include: How do I read RSS, How do I set up email, how do I manage my iPod, how do I add a printer... Windows Tools Hardware check on Windows before install, see if your hardware will work! ISO burning app for Windows? Why not...haha. Nice, simple 20 minute project. Restart app, linking to these tools. A link to a script that warns user that it's basically illegal to download the plugin, but can - easily. GDM theme idea (from openSuse): http://files.opensuse.org/opensuse/en/a/a6...dm-userlist.png CD Covers. Usplash and boot graphics. A screensaver! Could just be a fading Shift logo, nothing big... MORE wallpaper Please take a look at this list........... we need to get a standard list of apps we'll use. We do not have to re-invent the wheel, since we have most of the apps on our 0.6.5 versions of Shift. We just need a few "must have" apps. Let's see if we can incorporate these ideas in the versions we are working on.

Simon Veteran Posted May 23, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 23, 2008 I'm with Commodore Max, tbh. Our current logo is fine, no offense to you Cosmin. It's just much simpler. And it blends in with the website. After the months of work that went into the website already, and the critically acclaimed design, it is not an option to redesign it.
