On Fedora 9

Recommended Posts

I've just installed Fedora 9 and have just updated everything and gotten online. Anything tips and tricks I should know to make the most out of this and learn as much as I can?

Oh, since I'm on my laptop, how can I get it to recognize clicks by using the touchpad? I'm on a Dell D500.

One of the biggest complaints about Fedora doesn't come with most multimedia codecs. The easiest solution to allow you to listen to mp3s, watch movies or DVDs etc is to add the Livna repository of Fedora add-ons and then install the packages you need. See the Livna homepage for details.

Also in the Livna repos are video drivers for ATI and nVidia cards if you need them. -/me googles quickly- Ok, your laptop comes with Intel integrated graphics, so installing the drivers is not an issue for you.

Other than that I'd suggest learning by doing. Play with the system, try everything out; if you have any questions, just ask.

i'm so ****ed with fedora core 9 (well not really).

first i downloaded the 64bit version only to find no flashplayer support.

then i installed the 32bit version (manually add my winxp an vista installations to grub etc) only to find out my external 500gb which had 22gb free accidentally got formated because i forgot to uncheck a box.

dumb fedora core defaults to formatting all connected hdds unless told not to do so. (somehow i missed the external on the last install)

now i need a new hdd to recover my data :(

codec limitation was a drawback as well..

Yeah F9 is a great system. If you are programming install the Eclipse from the repository.

There are also some awesome games. Try urban terror (sudo yum install urbanterror), its a great game and completely free.

Also try gdesklets if you want widgets on your desktop (I personally don't use these).

If you haven't yet got DVD/MP3 codecs yet take a look here - http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f9.html
