Opensuse on ps3, 32 or 64bit?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

This is my plan. I am looking to install linux (Opensuse 10.3) on my 40gb ps3, so I can boot it up and have support for ntfs usb drives to play HD media.

First of all, will this work? Second, should I install 32 or 64 bit? 3rd, any tips for installing? If I do a default install will it cause any problems (accidentally formatting the entire drive or something?)

What you want is a PowerPC version of openSUSE. They have installation instructions for the PS3 on their web site: Click here.

Many thanks, that's spot on (Y)

Edit: Would opensuse be suitable for the PS3? What with the machine having a piddly 256MB ram (pfft), should I be going for a less intensive OS? What would be the best distro for a media center ps3?

I havent heard of people installing linux on the ps3 to manage their media files. Linux on the ps3 is kinda crippled because there's some sort of hypervisor that limits the resources linux can access., including the graphics processor and some of the SPUs or whatever they're called

cheers kyro, i've read the PPC version is the only one that will work though. Now just got to see if it will play high def files reliably on the ps3...
