PXE Media Player

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I have music stored on a samba server, and want to play music from it.

Id like to use a really simple PXE booting system with no hd or anything.

It is possible to have a NFS server to get files from as i have a liux vm running.

I was wondering if anyone could help me, either suggest a single solution, or a way of booting linux over pxe with a very basic media player (prefrebly with a library - winamp like would be perfect :)) and nothing else.

Thanks!

Ok, not exactly clear there...

Do you have a Linux VM (virtual machine) that you are wanting to boot via PXE so you don't need a local hard drive? That doesn't make sense, as a virtual machine is a guest OS on another booted OS that acts as host.

Have you set up a PXE boot server?

Here is some starter information I found with a simple google search:

From what I understand he wants to boot to a Media player (Linux is probably best bet) from a system (Over the network via PXE) with No local hard drive so he can stream videos via his Samba Server...

OR would it be possible for him to configure his NFS server (Instead of his SMB) to serve the files as he is running Linux in a Virtual machine.

I'm quite interested in this too apart from I am probably gonna get a ASUS Motherboard with that Instantgate Linux built in

I have a windows server with media on it, a VM running on the windows server running linux, so NFS is avaliable (most linux pxe boots seem to need it).

I am planning on buying a number of low power MiniITX systems (to play music and maybe more later) that i would like to boot over the network.

I have a working PXE server, one of the most useful things ive setup, packet with recovery tools etc.

Ive come across Songbird, which looks like it might do the media player job, but im still unsure how to boot linux via PXE and install programs on the image...

Im guessing that if i kick start the boot with pxe, the os files can then sit on the nfs server? and any programs i install / settings i change will be kept...?

Thanks
