Trying to install Ubuntu but CD won't boot up the cd menu

Recommended Posts

I downloaded and burned the ISO from the Ubuntu site and when I insert this CD, nothing happens. The Auto-Play menu opens up, but the normal menu that all cds/dvds usually pop up doesn't. I've tried with a CD insert from a PC magazine and this does the same thing. I'm using Vista. Please help.

You haven't been clear on this point, so I must ask... Did you boot with the CD? Or just insert it in a running PC? These must be booted to run.

If you tried booting it, and it doesn't boot, there are a couple of likely causes:

  1. Your BIOS is not set to boot from CD before hard drive
  2. You burned the .iso image as a single file on the CD, instead of as an image (which should provide you several files and directories on your CD)
  3. You have a bad burn (too fast, flaky media, etc.)
  4. You have a bad download

These are listed in approximate probability, based on what I typically see in the forums.

To est markjensen #4, get the m5d file that is available on the Ubuntu website in the download page and compare it with the one generated with your .iso by a md5 generator software (you can find a lot of them on google)
