XP SP3 - RPC error - Causing system to shut down

Recommended Posts

Anyone else get this pop up box?

I installed sp3 on my laptop, and when I resume from standby, I always get an RPC popup, and shuts down the system after a minute or two. Says it stopped working.

This a bug? is there a fix?

Isn't this similar to the results of having the blaster worm on your system, where a dialog would tell you about a pending system shutdown? However, I think that worm affected a different part of the system. Have you googled the error?

Edit: This is what happened with the blaster worm back in '03. Have you checked your system for viruses and worms?

Here's a link where you can find some information of fixing this issue as it applies to the blaster worm, I didn't think it would effect SP3, but who knows, this might solve your issue.

Interesting. This happened after a clean format and applying xp sp3

will look into this

I noticed this step:

Right-click on the first Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

service listed.

Select Properties.

Select the Recovery tab.

Using the drop-down lists, change First failure, Second

failure, and Subsequent failures from Restart the Computer

to Take No Action.

Click on Apply and then OK.

CAUTION: Make sure that you change these settings back

after completing the final step to remove the worm.

They were already set to "take no action."
