+John Teacake MVC Posted May 26, 2008 MVC Share Posted May 26, 2008 I have recently found the passion for Linux in the form of Ubuntu. I have it installed on my EEEPC and On a server at work. I am going to plan on doing all sorts with this box but I wanted to know what YOU do . . . . Inspire me :p . So Far I have: Set Up Ubuntu 8.04 With Riceys Tweaks for the EEE http://eee.ricey.co.uk/ I have set up a Nagios http://www.nagios.org/ server at work. I am going to build an OpenMoko image (When I get my 250GB Hard disk :D The Build takes up 10GB of space!!!) http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/MokoMakefile Built a HoneyPot (I'm actually scared to run it for a long time because my main PC and other PCs are set up on the same router and I dont know what the security complications are  http://www.shadowserver.org/wiki/pmwiki.ph....BuildAHoneypot I have installed PuTTY and OpenSSL with Cygwin for XWindow Server so I can run the linux Apps from a Windows PC. I want to add DyDNS to my router so I can access my PC from all over the world :D I have lost the link I found ages ago for advanced setup of SSL, Security and such like so if anyone could recommend me a good one I would be greatly appreciated. I found an Amazing guide to set up a Mail Server http://flurdy.com/docs/postfix/edition5.html I want to install a Torrent client . . . Dont know which one I want to set up and install TOR . . . Need a good guide. Installed IPList Installed KernelCheck but seriously broke my EEEPC install when I ran out of space, When the Kernel was compiling There you have it. If anything this post will help me have a list of what I need to do when I have to format and re install . . .

markwolfe Veteran Posted May 26, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 26, 2008 God, what a lot of useless replies. Anyhow, I have used Linux as the only OS on my PC for the past 5+ years. I do everything I need for daily computing on it. I played with Apache, but have no need to run a server. Now I am starting to play with Python for scripting/programming. Srsly
+6 Linux is good for servers, in fact better than Windows, at least for webservers. But yeah, what benefit would i have running it as desktop? More Secure? Yes but i have to give up gaming and a lot of other software. I rather use NOD32 and a free great firewall(Comodo), while i can use all my software. And XP here is just as stable as Ubuntu, with Compiz Ubuntu crashes occasionally too. But for webservers they really are more stable indeed :D
+John Teacake MVC Posted May 26, 2008 Author MVC Share Posted May 26, 2008 Well I find the whole idea fascinating, The fact that its all free and it can bring some older hardware back to life and its available to ANYONE. Im still going to have be running WindowsXP with MediaPortal for my TV/DVD watching needs. Vista as my main Desktop for E Mail and the daily chores, Web Browsing etc etc and then going to mess around with Linux :)
ring0
God, what a lot of useless replies. hey, he asked and is getting honest replies. if everybody that's ever downloaded a distro was an immediate and permament switcher, linux would have a noticably larger chunk of the desktop market. the truth is that for most people, it's just a plaything. *shrugs*

It is just that they aren't useful. It would be like posting a question on what tricks you like to teach your dog, and the replies were "I had a dog once, but I prefer cats". :unsure:Then several "+1" posts after that. :ermm:

+John Teacake MVC Posted May 26, 2008 Author MVC Share Posted May 26, 2008 Easy now! There was once some guy who used Cron??? as an Alarm Clock and He could sign into a PC wherever he was in the world or something and it would provide him an alarm clock or something along those lines. Thought that was a good idea . . .

-JMC-
I do everything in Linux. I only swap over to windows when I want to photoshop. I can't be bothered to go through the complications of running PS through Wine. I am a computer science student at university and find Linux extremely useful and a lot easier to work with. Its a good time to be running Linux in my opinion. Everything seems to be picking up with it.
