CPressland
Hey there, i'm currently running a web server from my Ubuntu Box and now need to upgrade the hard drive. So here is my question, I want to keep everything intact when I add the new hard drive. Is it possible to add the new hard drive then just create a partition mounted at /home so that the system will continue to use space as if it were kind of like a RAID? For example, at the moment my hard drive is setup with three partitions. / - 200MB free /home - 100MB free swap if I were to add a new hard drive and set it up like this HDD 1 / /home swap HDD2 /home - 250GB would it just "expand" the storage space of the home directory? Sorry if this is hard to understand but thats the best I can explain it :( Thanks guys EDIT: can a mod please change the title to "Expanding /home onto a new hard drive" Edited May 26, 2008 by Vegetunks
markwolfe Veteran Posted May 26, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 26, 2008 I am pretty sure you can image copy your drive over, then expand your partitions with gparted.
CPressland
But what about just expanding /home over two drives?
markwolfe Veteran Posted May 26, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 26, 2008 That would be easy, if you use LVM (Logical Volume Management)
CPressland
So, how would I go about preserving the /home directory and setting up logical volume management?
markwolfe Veteran Posted May 26, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 26, 2008 You could do it by creating an LVM on your transfer drive (using gparted or such), then copy your old partition into it. Remove your old partition, then expand. Maybe. DISCLAIMER: I have never done this.
CPressland
haha, ok, well this seams rather complicated, i'll just go with upgrading the entire hard drive. How do I clone my old hard drive onto my new one?
atlef
Clonezilla should be able to do that. It is a LiveCD. atlef.
