markwolfe Veteran Posted May 30, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 30, 2008 Are you sure that you have a good download, burn and install? Once you got it installed, it should do all the basics (open terminals and other apps) just fine.

markwolfe Veteran Posted May 31, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 31, 2008 Well, there is the CTRL+ALT+F1 to switch to a TTY text login. You can use a ps ax command to list tasks. The kill command can kill a task number. To kill X (your GUI) and restart it, you can use CTRL+ALT+[backspace] I added you to MSN. I have kids baseball games (4 kids, 4 games) today, so will be out most of the day. I think at this point, I would try a fresh re-install. Do not install nVidia drivers. Do not set up compiz or anything. Just a plain install. Then see if you still have these odd problems.
Berserk87
i did do a fresh install last night and i realized what had happened...now that i can see it. after doing the fresh install i managed to install everything i wanted and installed last time without using any guides, and without running into any issues. now that i know how to use terminal and the package manager, and that network manager was giving me problems the first time. i was right about what was happening last time. i didnt configure compiz to load on startup, so i guess they were opening on another desktop, i know it was compiz because the windows i could open were opening without the 'window decoration'. last time i tried installing compiz-fusion through the package manager and i guess i didnt install everything i needed either, because i only had 1/4 of the features, this time i did it through terminal. after doing this fresh install ive: system update install nvidia drivers install compiz fusion install wine install vlc player installed cario-dock
Berserk87
2 current issues: #1, windows i open are appearing 'under' the taskbar/panels, making me have to move the window to min/max/close etc... #2, even though i have my network connection set to activate on startup, its starting inactive, and i have to go into the network settings and turn it on.
