URGENT! Linux live-cd help

Recommended Posts

I can't find my XP disc to make a BartPE disc, so I need to turn to linux. I need a live cd distro which is as small as possible, but still has a reasonably easy-to-use GUI (no bells & whistles necessary -- just the basics .... even Windows 3.1 basic!) It needs to be able to access NTFS partitions (this is more key than the size), and the internet (if at all possible -- but I guess it needs to be able to obtain its own IP and such using DHCP).

Any help is appreciated!

Well, I really like Knoppix for this sort of work. It's going to be a full CD, though.

I suppose you can try DamnSmallLinux (Knoppix-based), as it is only 50MB. But it may be a bit odd for you, GUI-wise, as it uses fluxbox.

^ What all does the Knoppix distro come with? If it is complete enough, I would be willing to go with it as a long-term solution instead of the short-term "bandaid" I need right now. :) (Y)

More than 1000 software packages are included on the CD edition and more than 2600 are included on the DVD edition. Up to 9 gigabytes can be stored on the DVD in compressed form. These packages include:

Part of KDE, the default desktop environment, including the Konqueror web browser and the KMail e-mail client. Knoppix is also packaged with several other window managers, such as Fluxbox, twm, or IceWM.

XMMS, with MP3 audio, and Ogg Vorbis audio playback support

Internet access software, including the KPPP dialer and ISDN utilities

The Iceweasel web browser (based on Mozilla Firefox)

K3b, for CD (and DVD) authoring and backup

GIMP, an image manipulation program

Tools for data rescue and system repair

Network analysis and administration tools

OpenOffice.org, a comprehensive office suite

Many programming and development tools.

Personally, Ubuntu o DSL like mark said.

Alright. Where can I download it? Preferrably not via BitTorrent (I never have much luck with those -- for some reason they always seem to take forever or never finish).

Use our Shift Lite version. It will do all of what you asked, and more.
