So im getting my brother into Linux .. he just got a EeePC

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, what's going on? :)

So, my brother needed a computer and I convinced him to get an Asus EeePC, cause its a little beast :p

Now I want to get him into Linux, he also likes the idea, as I already use Mac OS as my primary OS, he would like to run Linux as a primary OS.

So im going to trash the windows install it came with and I've got Ubuntu downloading now, no basis on that choice other then checking out the definitive linux thread and seeing that was most popular, it really doesn't matter for now though, he can play with that later, just so long as his using a 'real' computer, no offense to windows guys :p

Now the first thing I need to know though, is how do I go about installing Ubuntu from a USB stick?

Thanks.

We'll have some more questions later on, ill probably get my brother to join these forums and ask whatever he needs in this thread.

Thanks guys ;)

Yea, i know about that, but wont be running it. The normal Ubuntu Desktop should run fine on it anyway, i mean XP's running on it :|

Thanks anyway.

but i cant find info on installing from a USB stick

Looking at it, I wouldnt mind one myself :D

My mate got an Eee and trashed the Xandros install for Windows. I was disappointed :/

why didnt you just get the linux version and install ubuntu on that, its cheaper than the windows one.

except for that its a good idea!

He wanted the 9" screen, thats the only reason, we were asking in the shop if we could get it cheaper without a Windows license but they didn't like that idea as much as we did.

I'll be looking through the linux apps thread shortly, once its installed and running :)

I have done much work with the EEEPC. Its a bloody brilliant gadget!. First of all get a USB CD drive. I got a LG one. Install Ubuntu from the CD that way. Its the easiest way. Get a big Memory card And/or a USB hard drive and install it on one of those two. Once you've got it installed do this . . . as there a few problems with Ubuntu/XUbuntu on the EEEPC. Ricey Tweak . . .http://eee.ricey.co.uk/. Check out the EEE Wiki Forums. There s a wealth of information to be had on there. . . http://www.eeeuser.com/
