[Suggestion] Change Friends Display Order

Recommended Posts

I did perform a search to find a topic that may have been posted previously. My question is, "Is there a way to reorder the friends list by providing rankings for the friends list display in your profile. I think if this has not been implemented previously a cool idea, like what myspace allows you to do. To clarify lets say you would like to mantain a ranking on your profile that shows which friends you rank as #1, and so on and so forth.

I do appologize if this question has been answered in a previous post, can this be done and if not why?

Thank you

I don't know if turning the social aspects into a "friend A is a better friend than friend B" thing is positive.

Add people with whom you agree, or even enjoy arguing with, and remove people who you feel ought to not be on the list.

As for me, I added one staff friend when the feature came out, but I don't see much value to it, so I haven't added anyone else. I think attaching more importance to "who is on your list" isn't a good thing, but I may be wrong.

Just a thought, but does the friend list display in order added? If so, then you can remove and re-add people to change the order.

That way there is no coding involved, and you can still have your "Fave Five"

Let's go with "no". This mod has no value on this board.

I will dare to go out on a linb and say that IMHO it does have value and heres why;

Neowin does have rankings for people to give you stars, and does reward subscribers and members to allow others to rank based on that system. I suggested this as a way for friends of friends to do this based on the personal contrubutions that mutual friends have made to one another. Personally I have friends that contribute meaningful and valuable content and it would be nice to show that in the friends list. It would be a nice way to say thank you to them. It is also a rewards system that would also be benefcial to other members that may not post a gagillion posts, or have a high post count just to reach milestones on the board.

I personally feel that just because you can post a gagillion posts does not mean that you are any more valuable than someone that tries to post relevent, and informative, and meaningful content. I feel that the content and contrubutions made is far more valuable than the global ranking system.

Just my two cents and may take some heat for suggesting this... but I am willing to put my head on the chopping block for having said so.

Thank you

I think that Joel's point is that adding code to rank and sort friends is a change to the existing forum code that Neowin uses. The user ranking code is already included in the forum code. So he is looking at the "extra work" versus "benefits".

Did you try what I mentioned in the post before yours? You were probably typing your post as I typed mine.

EDIT: I am testing that theory out now by adding my second friend ever. But your settings aren't set to allow me to add you without approval, first. :pinch: :p

Mark, I like the suggestion but it would seem to me that this would take some time to do this if you have many friends in your list. If this is the way it must me done then I suppose thats the way I will have to do it.

I think you'll find it just selects in a random order each time, so this wont help at all.

Actually, the side list seems to be sorted in order of member ID number. Not sure if this is because of a "sort" or just the way the data happens to be organized and retrieved from the database.

Either way, it looks like my experiment is a success only if you consider it as proof of it not working the way I was hoping it might to solve NeoFyle's request. :(

Thanks Mark for your assistance and defense in trying to assist me with this... "I rest my case... court is adjourned lol" (smacks the gavel on the bench) :p

I see no use in the friends feature - in fact I think it may as well be turned off. It's one reason why I prefer the old IPB user profile pages :p
