[openSuSE 11.0 RC1] ATI Catalyst 8.5 works!

Recommended Posts

After repeatedly trying (and failing) to get my older ATI Radeon 1650 PRO AGP to do 3D in both Ubuntu 8.04 (both with the open-source and ATI proprietary drivers) and openSuSE 11.0 RC1 (with the open-source drivers), I actually did manage to get the proprietary drivers to work in openSuSE 11.0 RC1. I actually used a method originally posted for oS 10.2 and modified it for 10.3 (the same method works in all the builds of 11.0).

Start here: http://blog.linuxoss.com/2007/04/20/opensu...s-installation/

I have pretty old hardware (ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe, P4 2.6C, 1.5 GB, ATI Radeon X1650 PRO AGP). The same method should work for any supported ATI card under oS 10.2 and newer (personally tested and proven in 11.0 RC1, from which I'm typing these words).

How is the driver support for ATI now? The last vid card I bought was nvidia primarily for the better linux drivers. ATI required to many hacks to get things to work properly.
