Groovedude
Ive read many threads and stickys about, right here a quick run down on my spec. Intel Quad Core 4gig Ram Geforce 8800gt ive downloded: ubuntu-8.04-desktop-amd64.iso *i know it says amd in the title but it was listed as 64bit support* i use flashfxp alot so i will use WINE so i can run this. i also use Mirc alot so i will use XCHAT for this. im curious whats driver installs like for linux now ?.. and also can i just format my windows Hard-disk and leave all my other partions and usb drives. as they are a mixture of FAT/NTFS ?.. can linux read and write fine with these. many thanks neowin members. markwolfe Veteran Posted June 10, 2008 Veteran Share Posted June 10, 2008 I think Ubuntu uses a 32-bit firefox so that plugins like flash (which is only released as 32-bit) will work. Driver installs? For supported hardware, almost effortless. Your nVidia card should be detected and Ubuntu will ask if you want to install the proprietary (restricted/non-free) driver. Yes, you do, if you want to use the 3D hardware on your GPU. ;) You want to "format my windows Hard-disk and leave all my other partions"? What you are saying is that you want to use the entire current hard drive? Or just a select partition (Windows erroneously calls these 'drives', like C: or D:, but they are truly just partitions)? Yes Linux can read/write FAT since about the dawn of time. NTFS read has been around probably about as long as NTFS has been. Write, however, has been experimental until about 3 years or so ago. I know of no problems writing to NTFS. Anything else? :D
strugart
In Ubuntu the hardware and detection is automatic, some hardware need restricted driveres, like nvidia and other can not be detected, you need to check for help in ubuntuforums.com, where you can look for people with a solution (if exist a solution, of course). Exist no problem to access a FAT partition but with NFTS with is no open source exist some limited acess. Finally before you delete the win partition you can import all the configuration and files in the setup wizard. Any another question just ask. markwolfe Veteran Posted June 10, 2008 Veteran Share Posted June 10, 2008 I would try the 64-bit version, since you have 4GB of RAM. If you go 32-bit, you will lose out on accessing some of your RAM due to the limitations of 32 bits of addressing.

markwolfe Veteran Posted June 10, 2008 Veteran Share Posted June 10, 2008 A few things. (Y) cool avatar! I have a acouple Red Dwarf books, and enjoyed them. I have avatars and sigs turned off, so I didn't see yours until your screeenshot. Yikes! That's a large screenie! Maybe next time, just the relevant section? It seems that the rather lengthy run-on error is complaining about the consistency of the NTFS filesystem on there. I would boot into Windows, and do a chkdsk on it, to make sure you have a clean filesystem. Linux may be refusing to mount it because there are conflicts in the data that need to be resolved. I would use Microsoft's repair tools on that. Hope that helps.

FiB3R
There's no way I can fully jump ship like that. Far to much stuff to learn, replacement apps to find and configure. And don't you think that your Geforce 8800gt is gonna go to waist if you are exclusively using linux?

Well, if it is of any consolation, nVidia's Linux drivers seem to be of much better quality than their Vista drivers, based on the number of complaints seen in the forum. ;) Why would it be a waste? Performance is great to have, even for games such as UT2k4.

markwolfe Veteran Posted June 11, 2008 Veteran Share Posted June 11, 2008 I'm going to tell you to skip the wine thing and go native. For one, you are installing a vulnerable version of OpenSSL. Why on earth would anyone want to set up a system with known vulnerabilities? If you use apt-get (or synaptic, your package manager), you will get all of the latest patches when they are released. Your system will be kept updated so you don't have old insecure software installed. Go xhcat or irssi or some such. (Y)

Performance is great to have, even for games such as UT2k4. Just because of the amount of games available for linux. Anyway, I've totally hijacked this thread. Time to move on.
