Ubuntu 6.10 won't install

Recommended Posts

I have tried to install Ubuntu and Xubuntu 6.10 on my old desktop however it "dies" after the load splash screen.

So this are the steps I take until the crash.

1. Boot with live CD

2. Check integrity of CD (its ok)

3. Boot again

4. Selected the first option to "Run and Install" Ubuntu

5. Splash screen comes up with the loading bar

6. Loading bar becomes full

7. Monitor recieves "no input" splash screen and the computer seems to idle.

I did this 3 times, Xubuntu did the same. I would try to install Ubuntu 7.x however, I got no spare CD's and im not going to spend $30 on a 25 pack at futureshop.

Can anyone tell me what possibly is going on with the installation, or any workarounds?

Buy a single CD ?

You can get them anywhere for $1...

It's an old Version, 6.10 is 2006. I doubt they carry updates for this old.

the plan was to install 6.10 and then update it to 7.x through the update service. Did it before, problem is, I cant even get ubuntu to intsall...and if I cant get Ubuntu 6.10 to install, what are the chances that 7.x will install either?

The chances are much better, actually.

Although, from reading your problem (booting the LiveCD and the install failing), I would try one of two things:

  1. When you get the "no input" on your display, it is most likely that your resolution/frequency is just out of range for your monitor. If it is running X at this point, there is a built-in feature to switch between resolution/depth modes which should help find a setting suitable for your display. Use CTRL + ALT + [num pad plus] (or num pad minus) to toggle through listed X modes until you get one that works.
  2. Download the ALTERNATE CD. It doesn't try to install from within the Live environment, it often fixes conflicts or problems encountered during an install from the Live media.

I would lean toward the Xubuntu 8.04 Alternate. Are you sure you have no friends or family that can burn a single new CD for you? Heck, I have even shipped CDs to people in need in the past. Also, check any nearby universities for a Linux Users Group. They will often do the install/configure for you if you bring in your computer.

Ill try out your suggestions. Its hard to find people with CD's nowadays since everyone is using DVD's, lol.

You amuse me, you know, as I told you can buy CDs at unit anywhere, drugstores, 1 Dollar shop, etc.

You can also burn an CD ISO on a DVD if you wish.

Unless you want to debug your 2 year old Linux as a personal challenge :p

The dollar store in my neighbourhood does not sell CD's as a unit. They only have bulk of 20cds or more... starting price $19.99 then they got the cd cases, 100 for $19.99. They may have "dollarama" written on it, but they sure don't sell stuff for a $1

ok, I burnt it to a DVD, used safe graphics mode and the entire screen just goes tannish in colour. The virtual desktop before installation I believe has crashed and it wont let me start the installation, but it will let me log out and log in, for some reason, but nothing else. This is really baffling me.

Is that from the "alternative" install? It sounds like it isn't, because you talk about the desktop and then not being able to start the install from that point.

I tried the alternate install as well. I get a message that "file packets fail to load" and the computer goes into an endless reboot.

File packets fail to load?!?! At what point?

That almost 100% sounds like bad burn, or bad download. Please do a md5sum (media check). I think that Ubuntu has a media check option at the CD boot menu.

I did that, it was fine according to it, and it sais it right when it is copying files onto the harddrive, just before it does any real installation.
